The Engineering and Environmental Office (EEO) is a department within Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. Our team is headquartered in Auburn Hills, Michigan, with additional locations in Oxnard, California, and Allendale, New Jersey. Our primary focus is to ensure compliance with government regulations concerning environmental air quality, fuel economy, and greenhouse gas, as they relate to motor vehicles and engines. EEO supports Volkswagen, Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, and Lamborghini (and in some cases Porsche).
Our key tasks include Emissions Certification, Fuel Economy Labeling, Running Change/Field Fix Submissions, Testing oversight, In-Use Verification Program (IUVP), On-Board Diagnostics (OBD), Production Vehicle Evaluation (PVE), Monitoring of current and upcoming regulations, Defect Reporting, and Compliance Reporting (e.g., GHG, CAFE, ZEV). EEO is VWGoA's primary interface with Government Agencies and Industry Trade Associations.
Job Summary:
Serves as an associate Regional Regulatory Affairs Coordinator (R-VKO) within the EEO Regulatory Affairs team focusing on a variety of emissions and environmental topics
• Participates in the development of mobile source emissions and environmental regulations
• Produces internal summaries of activities and reporting into Group regulatory processes
• Provides interpretation of US emissions regulations under supervision of Regulatory Affairs manager
Job Responsibilities:
Regulatory Development - (30%)
• Participates as a developing technical specialist in Federal and State rulemaking processes related to vehicle emissions, fuels, and other automotive environmental topics.
• Interacts with internal Volkswagen Group stakeholders to help coordinate and establish technical positions related to future regulations and associated test procedures.
• Analyzes and reports on proposed regulations and provide forecasts to internal teams.
• Coordinates with local and factory leadership, legal counsel, certification, and development teams to assess the impact of proposed regulatory amendments.
• Supports frequent interaction with government agencies to review technical regulatory proposals.
Support Certification and Compliance Planning - (25%)
• Provides technical support to EEO and Group certification teams.
• Supports future compliance planning discussions with Volkswagen Group offices to ensure implementation of US regulations in planning and forecasting tools.
Regulatory Interpretation Development and Documentation - (25%)
• Conducts in-depth review of complex regulations as needed to develop well documented interpretations.
• Coordinates findings with internal and external stakeholders, including communicating with government officials to establish consensus on interpretations.
• Maintains a history of results to streamline future requests and build a knowledge bank.
• Records interpretations and understandings into a VWGoA internal database.
External Technical and Policy Advocacy - (20%)
• Participates in relevant technical working groups and policy activities to represent the interests of the VWGoA.
• Coordinates with other EEO staff to participate in external activities involved in vehicle emissions, fuels and other automotive related topics.
• Provides summaries of important findings and projections regarding impacts on future regulatory policy or other outcomes that could affect future planning.
Degree Required:
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering/Science Discipline or Equivalent
Degree Desired:
- Master's Degree in an Engineering/Science Discipline or Equivalent
- German language skills
Years Experience Required:
- 3+ Years of experience in the automotive industry, preferably with automotive environmental topics, including legislative and regulatory programs.
Skills Required:
- Technical background in environmental studies
- Awareness of US Federal and State regulatory databases and online services
- Knowledge of data management systems.
- Project Management
- Communication skills - able to concisely communicate as an emerging subject matter expert to general audiences, able to efficiently communicate ideas through interpersonal, presentation and written correspondence and across varied audiences
Skills Desired:
- Knowledge of US automotive market
- Basic knowledge of vehicle engineering principles and processes
- Working experience in intercultural teams
- Technical presentation and communication skills
Work Flexibility:
- Domestic and International Travel as needed ~ up to 10% (2-7 day durations)
- Work schedule can be somewhat flexible (e.g., flextime, or compressed work week).
- Must be available to contact colleagues at European locations
