Job Summary

Under general direction, to be responsible for the activities of engineering groups engaged in traffic control and/or traffic planning design programs; individually, to correlate departmental programs and resolve mutual problems with various city departments, governmental agencies, private utilities and others.

Examples of Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (may perform other duties as assigned)

In accordance with departmental policies and objectives, subject to general review of plans and accomplishments, but with considerable responsibility for utilizing independent judgment and action in establishing methods and procedures, and determining means by which such objectives will be realized:

* Planning and directing the activities of engineering groups engaged in traffic control and/or traffic planning design programs by making general assignments to subordinates.
* Reviewing, analyzing and approving recommendations of subordinates involving determining need for, and layout of traffic signalizations, street marking and signs.
* Approving permits concerning city streets.
* Reviewing expressway construction projects.
* Analyzing traffic data and design of expressways.
* Making traffic surveys and gathering traffic volume and other related information.
* Making accident analysis and traffic congestion studies.
* Preparing street improvement schedules, and executing other phases of departmental programs.
* Ascertaining that departmental policies, procedures, and standards are adhered to and when conditions warrant, authorizing variations in these controlling factors.
* Establishing work programs carried out by sign shop.
* Approving installation orders to sign shop and Public Lighting Commission and work requests from other departments handled by sign shop.
* Individually, correlating departmental programs and resolving mutual problems with various city departments, governmental agencies, private utilities and others.
* Serving as departmental representative at conferences and meetings with representative of other agencies and groups, concerned with major traffic engineering projects.
* Participating in educational and technical programs concerned with traffic activities.
* Attending staff meetings.
* Studying and recommending changes in existing traffic ordinances and regulations.
* Making special investigations and preparing reports.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications (required):

* Education equivalent to graduation from an engineering school of a university of recognized standing with specialization in fields relating to traffic engineering.
* Three (3) or Four (4) years of experience in traffic and corollary engineering activities involving the study and design of complex traffic structure and the layout of traffic signalizations, street marking and signs.
* Two (2) years of experience in supervising a staff engaged in such work.
