We Are Hiring: Veterinary Assistant

Schedule:

Weekend / holidays. Hours are anywhere between 7AM-7PM for a minimum of 2-3 hours per day.

What You Will Do: Perform duties related to the operation of the animal laboratory according to specific standards and established procedures.

• Administer sedatives and general anesthetics, and assist in experimental surgery and physiological recording. Provide postoperative treatment and care for all animals.
• Observe animals for subtle signs of illness. Upon illness or death, obtain history and collect biological samples. Assist in necropsies by exposing body cavities, dissecting tissues and recording findings. Harvest tissue for pathology or preservation.
• Assist with the maintenance of quality control procedures and quality control charts applicable to the variety of tests performed and laboratory policies.
• Provide for the needs of all laboratory animals including the preparation of special diets, regular feeding, watering and general handling so the animals become accustomed to human contact.
• Oversee the receipt of all incoming animals including performing physical examinations, collecting biological materials for lab tests, administering medications, and observing animals during a quarantine
  period. Order animal husbandry supplies and equipment and maintain an inventory control system. Review requisitions for purchase of laboratory animals and maintains appropriate records.
• Perform cleaning and sanitizing of cages, pens and rooms while disposing of waste materials. Maintain animal holding areas in a manner consistent with hospital policy and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) standards.

What You Will Need: Licensure / Certification / Registration:

• Veterinary Tech credentialed from the Michigan Board of Veterinary Medicine obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date required.

Education:

• High school diploma or GED required.

Additional Preferences: 1 year of experience preferred.
