Lab Assistant Trainee

Position Description

To assist Medical Technologists at all times with any non-technical duties to include (but not limited to): Specimen processing, accessioning, answer phones, faxing of reports, billing, shipping and receiving, decontamination, and maintenance (as assigned).


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Is in training to assist Medical Technologists at all times with any non-technical duties that must be performed in order to produce timely reporting of patient test results (See Accessioning Training Checklist)
  • Follows the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, reporting, and maintaining of patient test records
  • Adheres to the laboratory's Quality Assurance policies
  • Documents all quality assurance activities as requested
  • Completes training to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance of samples
  • When applicable, notifies the shift supervisor, technical supervisor, or Laboratory Manager
  • Completes training to document all corrective actions taken when specimen processing systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications
  • Communicates with supervisors and peers regarding problems of an unusual nature and disseminates necessary information
  • Understands and is supportive of philosophy, purpose, and policies of VPA
  • Demonstrates proper care and use of equipment and supplies, where applicable
  • Promotes cost consciousness and maximum utilization of supplies
  • Abides by laboratory/regulatory policies
  • Uses Universal precautions at all times
  • Maintains a professional atmosphere
  • Performs the various duties as described above and any other duties and functions delegated and necessary to the efficient, economic and quality performance of the department

REQUIRED Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • High School Diploma
  • Ability to adjust schedule including weekends and evenings as needed to support Lab needs
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organization and problem solving skills

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Some college experience
  • Previous lab experience
