About the Job
Duties/Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be joining a collaborative research team studying basic iron biology in the developing brain. Located in Dr. Thomas Bastian's lab in the Department of Pediatrics, this lab manager position will also provide technical support for Dr. Michael Georgieff's research group in the Division of Neonatology. This position is located at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities on the East Bank.
50%- Mouse Colony and Lab Management. This will involve managing lab personnel in their mouse colony maintenance tasks and general lab management (e.g., genotyping, tailing/tagging, weaning, euthanasia, breeding, timed pregnancies, extensive record keeping, IACUC protocols, working with RAR staff and facilities, IBC reviews, ordering mice, ordering lab supplies, and inventory management). These duties also include responsibility for training and supervising/mentoring graduate students, post-docs and undergraduate student research assistants.
50%- Lab Research. This position will be responsible for initiating, performing, and analyzing neuronal culture experiments both independently and collaboratively with the PI and/or other lab members. Experiments will include immunoprecipitation, western blotting, qPCR, live fluorescent imaging of neuronal cultures, and immunocytochemistry and fluorescent microscopy of individual neurons in fixed cultures or tissue sections for dendrite structure, synapses, and mitochondrial localization. Image analysis using FIJI/Imagej to assess dendrite morphology, mitochondrial density, and synapse density. In addition this person will be responsible for initiating and managing transgenic mouse experiments and coordinating with collaborating labs. This position will require detailed time management and record keeping skills. It is ultimately expected that the candidate will generate important scientific results that will lead to publications in scientific journals.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
* Advanced degree with substantial research and publication record
* Demonstrated evidence of successful lab management
* Experience hiring, training, and supervising students and post-docs
* Ability to independently coordinate and lead multiple research projects
* Excellent communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
* Excellent understanding of experimental design and scientific method including proper controls
* Has experience with laboratory animal handling, preferably rodents (e.g., rats or mice)
* Detailed laboratory record keeping and organizational skills
* Ability to help design research studies and independently plan and perform complex experiments and data analyses
* Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, solve problems, and manage/prioritize multiple tasks
* Experience with multiple molecular biology and biochemical techniques (e.g., RNA/DNA handling, PCR, immunocytochemistry, western blotting)
* Demonstrated genetic understanding of Cre/Lox and tetracycline-controlled transcriptional activation transgenic mouse models
* Cell culture experience (preference to those with primary neuron culture experience)
* Rodent tissue dissection experience
* Experience with writing protocols for regulatory committee approval (e.g., IACUC, IBC)
* Experience with electronic lab notebooks and/or electronic inventory management systems
* Able to communicate technical aspects of the project effectively, as well as train personnel in complicated techniques
* Experience with delegating responsibility, supervising, and quality checking the work of student workers
* Working knowledge of the University of Minnesota ordering system (UMarket) and experience with lab supply inventory management systems
* Preference will be given to candidates with strong scientific and personal integrity, strong work ethic, and enthusiasm for learning
