Position: Mortgage Loan Underwriting Manager
Department: Mortgage Loans
Reports To: Director - Mortgage Loans
FLSA: Exempt
SUMMARY
The position will supervise the day to day operations of the Mortgage Loan Underwriters, ensure compliance with state and federal lending laws, monitor and analyze economic conditions affecting underwriting and recommend appropriate product design.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Work planning, prioritization and assignment; establish and monitor accountability for subordinates' job responsibilities
Aligns staff to achieve departmental and KFCU goals and objectives
Actively participates in strategy development for mortgage department
Tracks, monitors and prepares reports on departmental goals and objectives
Works collaboratively with other Mortgage managers to address outstanding issues, training initiatives, or opportunities for improvement.
Develops procedures and matrices for mortgage production team and updates them as needed within reasonable time-frames.
Underwrites all KFCU employee loans.
Creates guidelines for programs offered by KFCU to ensure consistency among production team and member service are not disrupted.
Creates and updates training plans for all Underwriter levels and monitor performance.
Mentors Underwriter I and II team members in professional development to achieve Underwriter III designation.
Monitors production standards and SLA's to ensure timely closings.
Provides advice and support when a final decision is difficult, marginal and/or assistance is needed on appraisal issues.
Oversees the manual underwriting or the validation of automated findings on Conventional and government loans.
Upon rejection of a loan, works with Production, Construction, and/or Sales Manager to ensure all options have been explored.
Coordinates resolution of Post-Closing issues and work collaboratively with the Mortgage Servicing Manager in issues relating to saleability or insuring or loans.
Develops and communicates Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to drive for continuous improvement.
Participates in regular meetings with the Sales team to represent the Underwriting function, solicits feedback on performance including issues and concerns, and responds appropriately with plans and actions to address concerns.
Responds to audit findings
Maintains a working knowledge of secondary market underwriting guidelines, private investor, private mortgage insurance guidelines, and In-House guidelines.
Responsible for compliance with all Federal regulations including Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC)
Demonstrates and encourages KFCU Vision, Mission, and Values
Meets continuing education requirements.
Completes all required compliance training.
Maintains knowledge of and adheres to KFCU's internal compliance policies and procedures.
Takes responsibility to keep up to date with changing regulations and policies and communicates to production team in a timely manner.
Uses Integrity Coaching skills to routinely and effectively coach staff to meet personal, departmental, and organizational goals, including documenting and tracking progress and results.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Handles any member or administration problems as they arise, in accordance with KFCU's guidelines.
Assists the department management with any loan promotions or additional duties as determined.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

Education:
BSBA in Finance, Accounting, or Business Required. May substitute 2 years of Mortgage Underwriting Experience for each 1 year of education for a total of 8 years.
Experience and Other Requirements:
Experience in building relationships and partnerships across an organization
Construction lending experience preferred.
Experience in the interpretation and application of Fair Lending and Consumer Protection laws/regulations such a as ECOA, TIL, and RESPA as they apply to credit granting required.
Working knowledge of underwriting criteria utilized by VA, FHA USDA and conventional financing guidelines set forth by FNMA and FHLMC for credit and appraisals required.
Must possess knowledge of underwriting practices and policies.
Ability to analyze and comprehend complex financial data and provide financial alternatives.
Strong computer skills including a fundamental understanding of automated underwriting applications, database management and previous experience utilizing laptop technology for communication purposes including accessing rate, credit and loan status information.
Strong time management skills and the ability to organize, prioritize and perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
Strong knowledge of mortgage lending guidelines and risk factors required.
Must be proficient with automated underwriting systems, as well as Excel and Word.
Must possess a working knowledge of mortgage calculator(s) and related tools.
Strong written and oral communication skills required.
Must possess ability to communicate, relate and work well with others.
Overtime may be required as work and circumstances require.

A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required, in addition to normal courtesy and tact. Work involves extensive personal contact with others and is usually of a personal or sensitive nature. Work may involve motivating, influencing or training others. Outside contacts become important and fostering sound relationships with other entities (companies and/or individuals) becomes necessary and often requires the ability to influence and/or sell ideas or services to others.
Computer Skills:
Extensive use of personal PC required, with working knowledge of Microsoft applications, including Word and Excel.
Must be proficient in use of internet and e-mail.
Certificates, Licenses and Registrations:
FHA DE and prefer VA SAR certifications
