Job description
Position Function:
Apply measurement science, mathematics, and physics to develop, document, and maintain calibration systems, procedures, and methods for electrical, dimensional, optical, physical, and/or mechanical measurement and test equipment (M&TE) based on analysis of measurement problems, and accuracy and precision requirements. Evaluate new calibration methods and procedures. Use statistics to analyze measurement standards and processes. Recommend calibration standards and M&TE. Maintain calibration laboratory and/or departmental accreditation, and quality systems.

Department Profile:
The Institute for Clean Energy Technology (ICET) at Mississippi State University is an interdisciplinary center comprised of research, and engineering design and development for industry and government partners.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
o Develop and evaluate calibration methods and techniques based on principles of measurement science, technical analysis of measurement problems, and accuracy and precision requirements for departmental M&TE
o Ensure accurate measurements
o Writing calibration reports based on an instrument's measurements and results
o Perform maintenance of measurement instrumentation
o Identify magnitude of error sources contributing to uncertainty of results to determine reliability of measurement process in quantitative terms
o Adjust measurement capability to minimize errors
o Responsible for maintaining quality assurance requirements for M&TE
o Advises others on methods of resolving measurement problems and exchanges information with other metrology personnel through participation in government and industrial standardization committees and/or professional societies
Supervisory Responsibilities - No authority or responsibility for other positions
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Statistics, Physics, Math, or related field.
Experience: Two years relevant laboratory experience in a regulated environment and dealing with analytical and general laboratory equipment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with ISO 17025
Experience with statistical studies and analysis
Knowledge of and familiarity with word processing and database software
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of calibration techniques and applications.
Knowledge of measurement uncertainties and the ability to analyze data.
Ability to identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
Well-developed interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to perform with professionalism and produce quality, reliable results.
Strong analytical and technical skills with an attention for detail and accuracy.
Self-motivated and directed, with the ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
Able to lift up to 50 pounds.
No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
Externally imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond one's control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to position; may involve conflict-resolution or similar interactions involving emotional issues or stress on a regular basis.
May require occasional work on nights, weekends, and hours outside of the regular 8-5 workday.
