Job Title: Cell Tower Crew Chief
Reports to: Tower Project Manager
Location: St. Louis
Level: Non-exempt
Hours: 40+ hours/week, 8:00AM 5:00PM; seasonality of business will require overtime hours and weekend work at times throughout the year.
Travel: 25% - 50%(includes overnight)

Summary
The Cell Tower Crew Chief is responsible for the overall success and safety of erecting, installing and maintaining wireless telecommunication towers and interrelated equipment on client sites. The Crew Chief will be responsible for modifying, repairing, installing or maintaining mobile or stationary radio transmitting, broadcasting, and receiving equipment, and twoway radio communications systems used in cellular telecommunications, mobile broadband, shiptoshore, aircrafttoground communications, and radio equipment in service and emergency vehicles in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes and industry standards.

Assure all crew members are trained and equipped with skills and tools to effectively perform their work duties in a safe and efficient manner. Provide on-site training as required to make sure all techs are competent and properly assigned work that they can perform safely and productively. Provide oversight of pre-assembly in the regional warehouse to inventory, prep, and assemble site specific equipment for purposes of expediting the installation intervals of projects as well as simplifying on site field work.

Coordination of crews for maximizing productivity and assuring customer projects are executed on time and to quality standards. Perform site audits and inspections, supplement crews as a crew member when required, and proactively identify barriers, and resolve them. Ensure accurate closeout records, proper record keeping, and information to the company. Follow all internal policies established by management and promptly report any deviations.

The following certifications and experience are a plus but not required:
  • PIM/Line Sweeping, Fiber Testing, Aerial Lift Operations, Gravitec, Comm Train, First Aid, CPR, OSHA 10/30, CDL, Boom Truck/ Digger Derrick experience.
Essential Job Functions
  • Perform a variety of tasks including structural analysis and planning, tower erection, assembling and mounting of antennas and other support equipment.
  • Use appropriate hand and power tools to properly measure, cut, bend, assemble and erect all components necessary for lifting, moving and installing equipment, materials, lines, antennae etc. in accordance with the applicable plans, specifications codes and industry standards.
  • Inspect completed work to ensure all hardware is tight, antennas are level, hangers are properly fastened, proper support is in place, or adequate weather proofing has been installed.
  • Fly equipment; use of rappelling on cell tower structures. Run coax and secure all equipment and cabling to structure.
  • Grounding of electronic equipment based on industry standards; weatherproofing lines; familiarity working with fiber is extremely beneficial.
  • Troubleshooting the cause of equipment failure using various procedures and test equipment.
  • Load and unload trucks/haul and hoist materials; includes proper material handling and storage.
  • Participate in all safety related processes and programs as requested. Engage with your work team to ensure we achieve zero injuries. Understand that no job is so important that your safety and that of your crew will be compromised. Watch for hazards and report any concerns to your supervisor or safety professional. If needed, use your stop work authority until the issue is resolved.
  • Report all accidents and near-misses to supervisor; participate in investigation process as needed.
  • Participate in all prejob work planning and safety discussions; identify safety hazards you or other employees may be subject to and take all necessary corrective action to eliminate and/or mitigate hazards.
  • Understand and respond appropriately to all safety hazards and warning devices (i.e. backup alarms, smell of smoke, different colored warning tags, warning sirens).
  • Understand, support, and follow lockout tag out procedures; attend site specific training and ensure all procedures as outlined in training are followed.
  • Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Listen to co-worker's suggestions, safety concerns, and recommendations while giving full attention and taking the time to understand the points being made, asking questions and providing feedback when appropriate.
  • Examine/inspect field conditions and identify problems, inaccuracies, and cost-saving measures that arise or that may be encountered; take corrective actions as needed and report any issues to leadership.
  • Maintain documentation that is a) reliable; b) accurate, and c) detailed. Including but not limited to: client and company checklists, forms, photos, and closing documents.
  • Maintain a safe and clean job site: pick up tools and equipment, secure job site each day in order to eliminate potential hazards.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience as a tower technician working on structures such as monopole, self-standing, guyed towers, utility poles, and roof tops.
  • Experience should include antenna and line upgrades, steel mod projects, and potentially microwave installation and alignment.

  • Vigilant maintenance on all safety/harness equipment.
  • A creative and innovative thinker to bring successful resolution to customer and personnel issues.
  • Strong oral and written communication, problem solving and interpersonal skills; ability to quickly build rapport with both customer and PG Technology business units.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Proven track record of taking initiative to accomplish tasks in creative ways with a sense of urgency and assertiveness, while successfully understanding and following direction.
  • The ability to prioritize tasks while rationally considering the outcomes of key decisions.
  • Experience leveraging technology to perform daily tasks, including strong familiarity with MS Office applications, web navigation & basic hardware.
  • Take ownership of any challenges or opportunities and seeing them through to a successful outcome.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the week (sometimes on short notice), although we focus on keeping people close to home for weekends.
  • The employee must regularly be able to lift and carry up to 80 lbs., up to eight (8) hours/day.
  • Will need to perform these duties in all weather conditions/climates, including heat, cold, rain, snow, etc.
