Job Summary: The Life Skills Trainer coordinates, plans, and conducts training for Advanced Life Skills curriculum classes. This position also maintains and communicates information to others regarding Advanced Life Skills curriculum. Serves as primary backup for Aftercare Specialist for crisis support for alumni. Responsibilities:
Oversees class management and performance related to Advanced Life Skills curriculum.

  • Primary contact for coordination of facilities, materials, and schedule for the Advanced Life Skills small group classes.
  • Establishes and maintains a safe and productive learning environment by utilizing effective classroom management techniques.
  • Uses the Advanced Life Skills Curriculum materials and the planning process to provide the best information and opportunity for youth to gain knowledge in additional Life Skills.
  • Maintains all equipment and supplies in good condition.
  • Effectively communicates the Advanced Life Skills process with youth, Family Teachers, school personnel, youth care leadership.
Provides crisis support for alumni.
  • Assesses immediate safety of the Family Home Program graduates to determine further actions; utilizes professional judgment to respond appropriately to situational needs.
  • Assesses need of each alumni through basic counseling techniques such as questioning, paraphrasing, and reflective listening through a needs assessment; follows questioning guidelines and pays attention to what the participant is and is not saying.
  • Explores internal and external supports.
  • Remains calm and objective during all situations, enlists support of senior staff as needed, and makes joint decisions about further action.
  • Provides helpful information to high school graduates including problem solving, and walks participant through steps so participant arrives at a solution.
Serves as a role model in carrying out the Father Flanagan's Boys' Home mission.

Required Qualifications:
  • Associate's degree in the Human Services or Behavioral Sciences; may substitute 2 years related direct service or training experience.
  • Available to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to conduct training with adult learners.
  • Ability to comfortably utilize a collaborative approach to teaching and learning.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex material translated into usable form to educate and improve life skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups of people.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Culturally competent to work with very diverse groups of participants.
