Background & Purpose of the Job

We are looking for an Associate Scientist in R&D to support Ice Cream, Foods, and Dressings Product Development and assist Senior Microbiologists to deliver microbiological product safety by design in all aspects of research and product development phases, including packaging, storage, handling and consumer end uses, and successfully deploy these to production operations. The position is suitable for a recent graduate with a Microbiology Degree or relevant degree with experience who can perform under limited supervision in a demanding environment, typical of a fast-paced large consumer and packaged goods company. The role requires a strong team focus to assist coworkers and excellent organizational skills to diverse projects across categories, supporting R&D product developers, supply chain QA, and providing expertise in food safety, product and process validations, factory hygiene and sanitation, and FDA FSMA Preventative Controls.

Who You Are & What You'll Do

This is a role that will be relied upon for assisting senior Microbiologists in providing guidance and expertise to specific Product Categories and Product Development Teams and Factory QA personnel.

  • The work includes basic microbiology lab functions, as well as, a liaison directing 3rd Party Laboratory activities, and factory laboratory activities.
  • Maintain system of Good Laboratory Practices with adequate controls and verifications; ensuring microbiology tests are conducted proficiently and safely, including working with food-borne pathogens, autoclaving waste, and maintaining a clean work environment.
  • Conducting clearance testing activities and microbiological analysis of samples from R&D, suppliers, and from factory operations.
  • Assist microbiology team in providing expertise and guidance to ensure microbiological safety by design; critical specifications; conducting microbiological challenge tests, shelf-life studies; hands-on operation of basic microbiological lab activities; and assist in providing expert guidance to Quality Assurance and factory personnel; and microbiological commissioning of new products and lines in factories.


Role is approximately 70% Laboratory based; 15% R&D support; 15% Supply Chain Microbiology support; and may involve travel
What You'll Need To Succeed
  • Bachelors degree in Microbiology or relevant Food Science Degree or Biological Sciences required with 1+ years of experience (internships included!)
  • Strong laboratory skills and dexterity, and good understanding of GLPs for ISO 17025 preferred
  • Specific category job-related training will be provided, and then the role is then performed with limited supervision. Superior teamwork mindset and excellent communication and presentation skills with proficiency in writing technical reports.
  • Strong integrity and ability to manage challenges under pressure. Very strong organizational skills are needed to manage a diverse set of activities and to coordinate numerous testing studies, while working on various R&D projects and supporting factory quality assurance teams.
