Paralegal, Intellectual Property - - Florham Park, NJ or Research Triangle Park, NC
The Paralegal, Intellectual Property (IP) role is integral to the continued protection and management of BASF's IP assets. The role reports operationally to the Director, Intellectual Property Operations, NA (based in San Diego, CA, USA).
If selected for this role, you will be expected to provide, in a timely and effective manner, the highest-quality IP legal support. You must be an experienced, self-directed professional, demonstrating excellent time management, organizational and technology skills. You will be responsible for patent preparation, filing, and prosecution, contract administration, and office and financial administrative responsibilities, acting as a liaison between internal and external customers.
Formula for Success: You Will...
Directly handle the following responsibilities, in cooperation with the North American IP team, global IP team, or in cooperation with outside counsel.
- Working under the direction of an IP attorney or patent agent, preparing and filing US, PCT, and foreign National Phase patent applications and accompanying documents;
- Preparing responses to office actions, restriction requirements, formalities, etc.;
- Preparing Information Disclosure Statements and cross-referencing cited art across multiple applications;
- Corresponding with outside U.S. and foreign counsel;
- Establishing, updating and maintaining files and records, including opening and closing files;
- Implementing and maintaining data management systems, processing a variety of highly confidential information;
- Maintaining dockets and docket reports for multiple IP attorneys and/or patent agents;
- Coordinating with IP Department colleagues in other regions on IP related matters, including interacting with foreign consulates in various countries to assist in securing legalization and other formalities;
- Assisting IP attorneys with the preparation of certain IP related agreements;
- Assisting business colleagues with preparing and submitting contract requests, modifications, and extensions for IP legal review;
- Reviewing executed IP contracts to complete contract records in the IP database;
- Acting as liaison between the IP Department, the Legal Department, internal business and R&D colleagues, companies, universities and contractors, as appropriate;
- Presenting training materials to internal business and R&D colleagues regarding the use of the IP management database and workflow processes;
- Scheduling appointments and maintaining calendars; scheduling, coordinating and facilitating meetings, and web conferences;
- Assist IP attorneys and/or patent agents with preparing reports, presentations, documents, and group projects;
- Attaining comprehensive knowledge of organizational policies, practices, procedures and applying to daily office management;
- Managing deposit and customer accounts with the USPTO; and
- Assisting IP attorneys and/or patent agents in creating and managing automated Request for Proposal processes; and
- Liaising with outside counsel, the Accounts Payable and Controlling departments, and the Director, Intellectual Property Operations to ensure timely and accurate billing.
Basic Qualifications:
- High School Diploma/GED
- Paralegal Certification, preferably from an ABA-accredited program
- Minimum of 8 years of experience working in a paralegal position, preferably in managing patent prosecution and IP contracts
- Bachelor's Degree (BA/BS) preferred
- Extensive experience with IP docket/management systems, preferably Anaqua
- High level of proficiency with MS Office applications
- Experience with using patent office databases/online interfaces, such as USPTO, WIPO, and EPO
- Multi-task oriented and able to manage tight deadlines
