Job description

Overview:
The successful candidate will conduct experiments, modeling and analysis in the area of boundary physics, aimed at power exhaust, pedestal control, and plasma-facing component (PFC) design, with a special emphasis on comparing lithium and boron wall conditioning and designing liquid metal PFCs. The candidate will be based onsite in Princeton NJ, and will participate in the analysis and/or operation of boundary diagnostics and actuators on a range of devices: NSTX-U, LTX-beta, ST40, and possibly MAST-U. Travel to support collaborative experimental research on offsite facilities may be required.

The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by Princeton University for the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be responsible for:

Proposing and conducting experiments, organizing analysis, and disseminating results in the form of talks, posters, and refereed journal articles, principally related to boundary physics.

Participate in the boundary physics operations group that is responsible for the impurity granule injectors in fusion devices, continuing development and deployment of lithium evaporator technology, and the divertor Langmuir probes.

Participate in the liquid metal plasma-facing component program at PPPL, including designs for future deployments of liquid metal systems on a range of devices

Qualifications:
Education and Experience:

Applicant should have a Ph.D. in plasma physics, nuclear engineering, or a related field. Strong experimental, analytical, and English communication skills are required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Experience with fusion boundary physics, as well as lithium science and technology is preferred.
