Position Summary
The Nanomaterials Characterization Facility (NCF) at theUniversity of New Mexico (UNM) is seeking to appoint a full time PhD-levelresearch scientist to manage its electron microbeam facility. The NCF instrumentationcomprises a newly installed JEOL NEOARM ARM 200CF aberration corrected atomicresolution TEM/STEM instrument with EDS and EELS systems, a JEOL 2010 HRTEMwith EDS, and two FEI Dualbeam FEGSEM FIB instruments, in addition toassociated sample preparation equipment. The NCF is located in a newlyconstructed suite of analytical laboratories in the Physics, Astronomy andInterdisciplinary Sciences (PAIS) building on the UNM campus. The facility is avigorous multiuser laboratory run by the Department of Earth and PlanetarySciences and the Center for Microengineered Materials (CMEM) that provideselectron microscope facilities to a wide range of users from academia, industry,and national laboratories in New Mexico and elsewhere. The appointment will beat the Senior Research Scientist level. The position will involve management ofthe operation of the laboratory on a day-to-day basis, support and training ofusers, laboratory safety, instrument maintenance, and analytical technique development. - We are particularly interested in individualswho have a strong record in the application of transmission electronmicroscopy, particularly aberration-corrected STEM and electron energy lossspectroscopy to research problems in nanoscience and nanotechnology.
- Prepares analyses, reports, and other documentation for publication;presents findings at local, national, and/or international meetings.
- The appointee will be expected to develop theirown research program, write research grants, and will also have the opportunityto develop collaborative research activities.
- Supplies technical leadership and consultation to professional co-workers,collaborators, and graduate students.
- The applicant should have strong interpersonaland oral and written communication skills and be willing take on some formalteaching activities at the graduate level.

Conditions of Employment
- Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check. Additional health screenings may be required, dependent on the nature of the research conducted, as determined by Employee Occupational Health Services.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Applications with a PhD degree in the physical sciences with at least two years postdoctoral experience are preferred.
- Knowledge of scientific approach and methodologies in the field of transmission electron microscopy, particularly aberration-corrected STEM and electron energy loss spectroscopy to research problems in nanoscience and nanotechnology.
