The Peer Specialist provides peer support services as a parent, consumer or young adult with lived experience in navigating mental health /substance abuse services. Serves as an advocate, shares coping skills, and provides recovery and resiliency related information for peers. The peer specialist performs a
wide range of tasks to assist and support people in directing their own lives and their personal recovery process. This means supporting people to live self-directed lives in self-determined roles are socially
included in communities of their choices. The peer specialist will role model competency in resiliency and recovery and ongoing coping skills.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
● Will serve as member of the Care management team and will:
● Assist his or her peers to identify recovery goals
● Provide information and support to assist peers to effectively participate in developing a plan of care, engage in team-based planning and facilitate co-creating of Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP) as needed based on recipient choice.
● Model and collaborate to develop problem solving techniques with individuals
● Collaborate to assist peers how to:
● Identify their strengths and needs;
● Identify and combat negative self-talk
● Identify and overcome fears
● Employ coping strategies and relapse prevention skills
● Share resiliency and recovery-oriented educational materials
● Employ strategies to engage parents of children and adult peers who do not keep important follow-up appointments to identify barriers & obstacles and collaborate to find solutions
● Assist peers on inpatient units to prepare a comprehensive plan for discharge that includes relapse prevention strategies
● Link peers to community-based peer, parent, and family support services
● Serve as liaison with advocacy organizations regarding peer support training and implementation initiatives.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
● Candidate must be able to work effectively and prioritize in a fast-paced environment in order to meet the demands of the organization. Candidate must role model competency in recovery and ongoing coping skills.
Job Requirements:
Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Minimum of two (2) years experience preferred. Nursing Assistant or related health care field preferred. Experience as a medical technician in armed services is highly desirable.
Mental Health Training preferred.
Certification: Possess and maintain a Peer Support Worker Certification from the New Mexico Office of Peer Recovery and Engagement.
