Position Summary

Lifeguards monitor activities and ensure the safety of swimmers at aquatic facilities, responding to emergency situations. Lifeguards participate in swimming pool/facility safety and maintenance activities.

Seasonal Lifeguards are only employed to work 10 to 12 weeks during the Summer Season, and may be assigned to work in either an indoor or outdoor facility.

This is a Safety Sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

Education, Training and Experience minimum required to proficiently perform the job

Education / higher education: High School diploma or GED

Other requirements: If a student in High School, must be at least 16 years of age. Must be able to swim at least 1500 yards and tread water for several minutes (will be tested every two weeks).

Education and/or experience preferences: Prefer prior experience as a Junior Lifeguard.

Required certifications, licenses or registrations: Must be able to complete the following American Red Cross / Jeff Ellis & Assoc. courses: Lifeguard, Learn to Swim Instructor, CPR, AED and First Aid

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required to proficiently perform the job

Knowledge: Lifeguarding and lifesaving techniques and procedures.

Skills: To identify hazards, unsafe behaviors, and swimmers in distress and properly address each situation, preserving life and safety. Must have excellent public relations and customer service skills.

Abilities: Ability to lift items to 49 pounds frequently. Ability to swim at least 1500 yards (will be tested every two weeks).

Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Will interact with other City staff, taking direction and providing information; will interact with facility patrons and swimmers, providing direction, guidance, instruction and enforcing rules and regulations.

Authorities and Accountabilities

Level of independent decision making: Minimal-incumbent primarily carries-out instructions and follows established procedures

Budgetary/Financial/Asset accountability: None -- Position has no accountability for, or authority to make, budgetary or financial decisions.

Span of control: Responsibility for own work (no supervision or leadership expectations)

Essential Functions

The following functions are typical for this position. The omission of specific functions does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned.

* Performs lifeguarding and instructional duties, warning swimmers of improper activities and hazards. Responds to emergencies, rescuing persons in distress or in danger of drowning; provides rescue breathing, CPR, AED or First Aid.
* Follows and enforces rules and regulations, maintaining facility order and safety. Notifies management of accidents, rescues or problems.
* Assists in facility and pool safety and maintenance activities, including grounds, lobby, bathrooms and party room. Monitors facility, including bathrooms and locker rooms, for cleanliness and supply needs. Conducts tests to determine water quality. Maintains/completes chemical logs, hourly count logs and periodic/special reports as requested.
* Maintains up-to-date rescue knowledge, skills, abilities and procedures in the aquatic industry.
* Provides swim instruction to swim lesson participants at all swim levels. Plans and prepared curriculum for swim lessons.
* Responds to questions asked by pool users.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Daily activity level: Blend of sedentary and physical work

Physical characteristics: While performing the essential functions of this job, some tasks involve the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of sitting, standing, walking and/or swimming. Emergency tasks and training involve the performance of physically demanding work, which may involve some combination of running, climbing or swimming, and may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy and/or heavy objects, materials and/or persons. Frequently required to sit, kneel, stand, stop, communicate, reach and manipulate swimmers; walk or rove around the pool. Job requires oral and aural communication; Job requires reading and comprehension of written materials; Job requires normal vision; Must be able to distinguish colors; Must be able to see in dim light; Grasping with hand, gripping; Use of medical equipment (i.e. AED, give injections, bandage/splint); Lifting/carrying/push/pull up to 49 lbs.; Working while standing for prolonged periods of time; Running while carrying materials/equipment/gear/tools; Swimming/ lifeguarding activities; Working more than 8 hours/day. Requires frequent use of sensory activities such as talking, seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling and depth perception to help with the recognition and identification of swimmers in distress or unsafe behaviors. Required to wear City of Rio Rancho uniforms, swimsuits and use provided safety equipment.

Exposures: Exposure to biological agents, human/animal body fluids, blood pathogen, excrement or tuberculosis; Working outside in inclement weather conditions.

Extraordinary working conditions: May work in an outside environment that is subject to quick changes in environment, including rain, thunder/lightening, and hail. Bare feet; slippery surfaces; possible exposures to blood-borne pathogens

Hazardous equipment/machinery used: Ladders; diving boards

Required personal protective equipment: Must keep lifesaving gear closely available at all times when guarding the pool area . Safety Glasses; Safety Goggles/chemical splash goggles; Face shield; Breathing mask; Latex gloves; Rubber gloves; Chemical resistant gloves.
