Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group): The scope of this position is to participate as a research scientist in small project teams and conduct independent research to support the entire Thin Films Research portfolio, which addresses multiple Corning business divisions. This requires the application of technical expertise in material science and device design and fabrication within the context of a cutting-edge micro/nano-fabrication facility. Research will be conducted in the areas of advanced thin films and surfaces on glass, ceramic, and glass-ceramic materials to provide unique and/or improved electronic, optical, and mechanical performance and functionality.
Day to Day Responsibilities: This position requires the thoughtful design, efficient execution and rigorous analysis of experiments within the Thin Film Research clean room facilities, utilizing the tool sets in the lab, which include lithography, deposition (ALD, PVD, CVD, PECVD), etch and characterization. The scientist will collaborate with the Equipment and Process teams to develop new materials and processes an incorporate design changes to process tools. The scientist will initially participate in early stage (I/II) project teams but also support downstream business-critical topics as necessary. The scientist will propose research projects as appropriate.

40 hours per week.
Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration):
The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. in Physics, Material Science, or Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical), or equivalent, with 0 to 5 years of experience. Alternatively, the successful candidate will possess an M.S. in the same fields with a minimum of 5 years experience.
Required Skills (These are skills that candidates must possess):
1. Demonstrated capability solving complex materials / process / equipment problems
2. Experience in design, fabrication, and testing of semiconductor, MEMS, sensors, and/or microfluidic devices.
3. Strong technical skills in thin film materials processing and characterization, and structure-property relationships.
4. Experience in developing research project plans
Desired Skills (these are the skills that would be nice for candidates to possess):
1. Advanced training in design of experiments,, statistical analysis, and root cause defect analysis
2. Project management competencies
3. Small project team leadership experience
Soft Skills (Communication/Team/Leadership):
1. Ability to develop clear and statements of project goals, objectives, and status in written presentations and oral formats.
