Dr. Michael Van Amburgh's research program is devoted to problem-solving contemporary issues in nutrition, physiology, and management in the dairy and livestock industries and disseminating new knowledge to students and the industry. The laboratory team is a diverse group of researchers, including Postdoctoral Associates, graduate students, and undergraduates.
What You Will Do
You will partner with a Principal Investigator (PI) to manage a research program in dairy cattle nutrition and feed chemistry that supports nutrition modeling and research into the productive efficiency of lactation dairy cattle. You will collaborate with the PI to conduct and analyze research and laboratory experiments. Assist in experiments with dairy cattle. Conduct wet-lab procedures appropriate for nutritional physiology and biochemistry. Specific duties include:
- Evaluating lab methods, procedures, and techniques; making recommendations for improvements.
- Guiding others as needed with experimental design and implementation.
- Maintaining laboratory equipment.
- Preparing preliminary written reports of the experiments conducted and the results generated.
- Generating, recording, and performing basic statistical analyses of research data and compiling in report format.
- Developing systems to keep detailed and accurate records of experimental activities and the data accumulated.
- Writing laboratory operating procedures using various software packages.
- Assisting in grant proposal writing, budgeting, and publication preparation.
We are looking for a talented individual that enjoys helping to manage a research program and a lab to ensure safety compliance. We need someone with strong customer service skills with a focus on excellence and who excels at building relationships with multiple stakeholders. Additionally, we need someone who has:
- Bachelor's degree in Animal Science or related field and 4+ years of research and/or lab management experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Excellent computer skills, including word processing, excel, and data entry.
- Ability to pay attention to detail and maintain high data quality standards.
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work quickly and effectively while prioritizing workload.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to efficiently manage laboratory procedures and facilitate research protocols.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact with research team and supervisor.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and guidelines.
- Ability to solve problems and improve research protocols.
- Ability to stay up to date with new research techniques and evolving projects.
- Experience in collection of data and preparation of summaries and final reports.
- Ability to keep the equipment, materials, and lab organized.
- Ability to contribute to an inclusive, high-quality, and respectful work environment.
- Exercise sound and ethical judgment.
- Demonstrated ability to develop effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
- Ability to organize research data.
- Demonstrated ability to work with and care for large animals (i.e., livestock).
- Willingness to work irregular hours occasionally.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Master's degree in Animal Science, Biochemistry, Nutritional Science, or related field
- Experience handling live animals, preferably dairy cattle.
- Knowledgeable with basic concepts of feed chemistry, LCMS operation and bioassays.
- Experience with collecting and handling feed, blood, tissue, and/or gastrointestinal samples.
- Ability to perform basic feed chemistry techniques in the lab.
