Associate Editor - Low-carbon Metals

Grade ( relevant for internal applicants only ): 9

The Location: Pittsburgh, PA, Houston, TX or New York, NY

The Role: S&P Global Platts is looking for an Associate Editor to expand our low-carbon metals price assessments and market coverage. ESG and decarbonization are top strategic initiatives for metals companies around the world. As these are also areas of focus for S&P Global, this high-profile role presents an immediate opportunity to have a direct impact on metals pricing strategy and market development. Based in Pittsburgh, Houston or New York, the responsibilities of this position include researching and launching low-carbon metals assessments, engaging with market participants who produce, trade, consume, sell or are otherwise impacted by US and global low-carbon metals markets and generating pricing content and analysis.

The Impact: The successful candidate will be part of a global team and possess knowledge of market intelligence-gathering and assessing commodities prices. This individual must be comfortable writing about pricing information and interpreting data. The finalist will be considered a subject matter expert in the industry; be able to master the challenges of covering metals markets on a frequent basis and be a team player. Furthermore, the successful candidate will understand the relationship between the physical and derivatives markets for metals.

The Career Opportunity: The successful candidate will have opportunities to grow within the US metals team and the global company. These opportunities can include, but are not limited to, international travel to learn about global markets. Metals benchmark protection and seeking new opportunities for growth are areas of focus for our company, so success in this role will be noted by key corporate decision-makers.

The Team: The successful candidate will be part of a global team, based either virtually in the Pittsburgh area or the S&P Global offices in Houston or New York.

What we're looking for: Knowledge of the Platts approach to pricing commodities and prior exposure to international financial and commodities markets are preferred qualities. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Powerpoint, Outlook and Excel is a must, as is the ability to speak and write in English.

Our Hiring Manager says: This is a great opportunity for someone looking to take the next step in their career, gaining valuable experience covering markets. The successful candidate will help define and execute Platts' content vision and work with a talented team. The culture of our team is fun and collegial, and each member contributes on a daily basis.

Responsibilities: Primary responsibility will be reporting on North American low-carbon metals markets and raw materials. This will include sharing pricing information in real time, producing analysis of market pricing and trends during the course of coverage and assessing markets based on physical bids, offers and traded information in line with our published methodologies. Writing market analysis, producing graphics and publishing data explaining the trends driving prices and the reasons why we have assessed the price where we have is a part of the daily process. Communication with our metals teams in Asia and Europe is expected throughout each business day, as the regional markets are influenced and impacted by buying habits and price levels in other regions. This individual also will coordinate closely with a counterpart based in London, focusing on low-carbon metals and raw materials pricing.

The individual will also manage and build our database of contacts, identify opportunities to improve our methodology or launch new assessments. The candidate will also have opportunities to conduct webinars, podcasts and other digital content, while generating in-depth analysis. The candidate may be called on to assist with creating or editing content for other Platts metals publications, as well.

Accountability includes:

  • Engaging with market participants, researching new price assessment opportunities and launching new price assessments
  • Gathering, verifying and publishing commodity price information, producing price assessments and interacting with global metals markets
  • Writing daily analysis/feature stories
  • Developing and expanding coverage of the global low-carbon metals sector
  • Serving as point of contact for internal and external audiences in providing context around the copy, graphics and data we publish
Qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent is required
  • Proven reporting/writing/editing/analytical experience assessing commodities pricing and markets
  • Excellent spoken English and writing skills
  • Superior communication skills with the ability to converse articulately across a wide range of groups and personalities, internally and externally
  • Clear, concise writing style, strong editing skills
  • Possess energy, tenacity and ambition to excel in a fast-paced environment and foster that culture throughout our team
  • Analytical ability and comfortable handling numbers
