Job Overview
The Director of Raw Materials team will support Macy's Private Brands by overseeing fabric sourcing, development and optimization. In partnership with Macy's Private Brand teams, including Strategic Sourcing, Product, Design, as well as the Fashion Office, the Fabric team will help teams in developing and managing seasonal and core fabrics to ensure quality, competitive costing and responsiveness. Key responsibilities of a Fabric Manager include managing current fabric library and developments, identifying FOB / brand material opportunities for optimization, formalized KPI tracking (e.g., adoption, lead times, tracking etc.) and managing relationships with mills.
Essential Functions
Provide leadership and expertise to Raw Material team
Manage existing materials and seasonal material developments
Lead efforts to identify opportunities to leverage and consolidate core fabrics across brands and FOB to business objectives
Collaborate cross functionally with Macy's Fashion Office, Macy's Private Brands Design, Product Teams, Sourcing and overseas office across the seasonal calendar
Align in pre-season with Macy's Fashion Office, Macy's Private Brands Design and Product teams to identify "IT LIST" trends in fabric. Ensure team is managing the palette and library. Share with Design at macro and brand level
Create and manage direct relationships with mills and vendor/mills to partner on material consolidation, greige projections and management, and researching new materials. Vet and support onboarding of new mills
Travel overseas to support sourcing of new fabrics, build relationship with key vendors and mills. Attend fabric trade shows to research new mills an identify emerging fabric innovations / trends and create trend recaps to share with PB teams to utilize for seasonal development
Identify pricing opportunities and negotiate fabric price points with mills and in partnership with OSO to support brand goals
Utilize technical expertise to translate design intent to executable fabric / materials
Troubleshoot fabric quality issues, re-engineer fabric for better costing or improved quality and pattern with Overseas Fabric Manager for on the ground support and in season fabric issue resolution
Understand key milestones and manage deadlines to development calendar. Attend key PB fabric development meetings to support sourcing of new materials
Responsible for managing material information in PLM, send material requests to suppliers and OSO and create material libraries
Maintain accurate information and toolsets including physical library, PLM, and vendor / mill matrix for both FOB and LDP suppliers
Qualifications and Competencies
7-10 years' experience in fabric research and development or textile manufacturing
3-5+ years leadership experience at Director level or above
Fabric Manager should have deeper understanding of fabrics and how they construct a final product. They must also understand a production calendar
Fabric and trim expertise with deep product development knowledge
Proven track record of success on teams in similar roles
Demonstrated performance history working across x-functional teams including R&D, design, product, vendors, and raw material mills
Applicant should have exceptional written and verbal communication skills
Applicant should be a creative thinker with the ability to problem solve, think critically and adapt in a fast-paced environment
Ability or interest to lead and mentor other team members
Applicant should be proficient in PLM and Microsoft Suite
Ability to manage multiple deadlines and seasonal overlap
• Practices open and continuous communication, values keeping others informed, effectively presenting information in a clear, concise manner.
• Ability to effectively plan and execute strategies.
• Ability to solve problems as well as recognize issues and deal with them directly
• Ability to work a flexible schedule with retail hours, including day, evening, weekends, and/or holidays
Physical Requirements
• Position requires prolonged periods of standing/walking around facility or department
• Frequent use of computers and other technology necessary to perform job duties, including handheld electronic equipment.
• May involve reaching, crouching, kneeling, stooping and color vision
• Frequently lift/move up to 25lbs
