Exhibition Technician

Job description

Gagosian seeks an experienced Exhibition Technician to lead the preparation and installation of exhibitions across three Chelsea gallery spaces, under the oversight of the Director of Exhibitions. This position requires a solid background in art handling, demonstrated ability to safely move art objects, proper use of tools and equipment, the ability to multi-task and problem solve. This position also requires a willingness to work flexible hours as needed.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

- Assisting with planning and coordination of exhibitions;

- Physical movement and installations of art work along with supporting building infrastructure such as construction of exhibitions, sprinkler and electrical systems etc.;

-Leading the movement of the art within the spaces, in coordination with the Registrars, sales staff and their assistants;

- Act as liaison between all three gallery spaces to the Director of Exhibitions;

- Working closely with the Exhibitions Coordinator on proposed exhibition maps;

- Overseeing the fabrication and production of works;

- Scheduling and overseeing exhibition crews, including internal and external crews for installs and deinstallations;

- Consulting on crating and transporting of works of art;

- Ordering and maintaining equipment and materials for installations;

- Overseeing construction in the galleries for exhibitions;

- Writing installation manuals for works of art;

- Managing exhibition lighting;

- Working with local, national and international shippers coordinating pick up and deliveries for exhibitions, loans and consignments;

- Preparing condition reports and working with conservators to maintain and inspect artwork;

- Assisting team in opening and closing the galleries.

Qualifications:

- BA or BS required, preferably in an art field or extensive art experience.

- Minimum 5 years' experience.

- Responsible and able to follow through on jobs, take instruction from co-workers, as well as exercise absolute discretion with clients and sales staff.

- Ability to handle high volume/high complexity installations and operate under tight deadlines.

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required to effectively interact with all levels of the organization.

- Ability to multitask and handle a high volume of art movements.

- Must be comfortable with large-scale installation and be able to communicate well with art handling and construction crews, as well as lenders and curators.

- Shipping artwork including packing and crating.

- Familiarity with: Loan Agreements, Consignment Agreements & Certificates of Insurance.

- Model Making experience a plus.

- Ability to operate a forklift and a scissor lift.

- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (over 50lbs).

- Ability to climb a ladder.

- Ability to safely operate power tools.
