Job description
Job Description:
The Wall Street Journal's Health & Science group is looking for an enterprising reporter to cover news, ideas and people involving the Earth sciences-including geology, oceanography, climatology and more. Understanding these subjects is vital for our understanding of the world, and for the policy and business decisions made every day. Earthquakes devastate communities. Invasive species travel the globe piggybacking on international trade. Companies and markets struggle to define their carbon footprint. New technologies and policies are emerging to tackle all of these issues, and the Journal's readers need coverage that reflects clear-eyed judgment and a sharp focus on the science and real-world impact. We're looking for someone with the vision to see impactful stories in a vast sea of information, the energy to jump on new research and breaking news of catastrophic events from earthquakes to hurricanes, and the ability to explain complicated science in an engaging, accessible way.
You will report to the science bureau chief. While you will likely start working remotely, you will eventually be based in our New York office.
You will:
- Identify the most consequential developments, people and new research involving Earth sciences
- Distill the complicated scientific concepts that shape our environments, daily lives and catastrophic events into compelling stories for our audience.
- Spot and explain science stories in breaking news events.
- At least 3-5 years covering science
- Familiarity with recent developments in science and technology
- Experience covering breaking science news
