Summary

Station Sciences Technicians ensure peak plant performance by collecting various system samples and performing laboratory analyses utilizing chemistry instruments and equipment and also use radiation protection processes and detection equipment to protect nuclear power plant workers and the general public from exposure to ionizing radiation

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Operating and maintaining chemistry equipment, and analytical instruments.
  • Responsible for documenting and logging chemistry and radiological survey data.
  • Participate in a thorough training program.
  • Perform radiation and contamination monitoring in all areas of a nuclear power plant using portable and fixed radiation detection equipment.
  • Perform required sampling for liquid and gaseous effluent releases.
  • Operate computer applications associated with Station Sciences job performance.
  • Provide on- and off-site radiation and contamination monitoring support to the Emergency Response Organization during drills or actual emergencies.
  • Communicate radiological hazards to plant personnel through posting, tagging, pre-job briefings with workers, radiation work permit review and job site surveys.
  • Perform job coverage activities in all areas of a nuclear power plant which requires working in extreme temperatures, climbing, respiratory protection equipment, lifting, walking and directing work crews.
  • Assist in training and qualifying other Station Sciences personnel.
  • Conduct isotopic analysis of in plant radiological samples.
  • Participate in the stations corrective action program, to identify and correct conditions in the plant.
  • Implement regulatory required programs, such as radioactive material/waste shipping, instrumentation calibrations and source checks, and dosimetry issuance.


Working Conditions:
  • Shift work that may include nights and weekends
  • Some travel that may include overnight travel
  • Nuclear plant environment with exposure to cold, heat, noise, radiation chemicals, and confined spaces


Basic/Required Qualifications:

Station Science Technician II
  • A BA/BS degree in science, engineering or technology or an AS degree in science, engineering or technology and one year of experience or six years nuclear navy experience or equivalent or completed the Nuclear Plant Initial Training Program for Chemistry, non-license operator, RP or equivalent with 1 years nuclear experience.


Station Science Technician III
  • A BA/BS degree in science, engineering or technology or an AS degree in science, engineering or technology and two years of experience or six years nuclear navy experience or equivalent or completed the Nuclear Plant Initial Training Program for Chemistry, non-license operator, RP or equivalent with 3 years nuclear experience.


Desired Qualifications:
  • US Navy ELT OR equivalent experience and training
  • Related nuclear plant initial training program (Non-Licensed Operator, Radiation Protection/Chemistry, etc.)
  • BS or BA in Science, Engineering or Technology
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, Access, etc.)
  • One semester of English composition or technical writing
  • Previous nuclear plant experience
  • Knowledge of nuclear plant systems
  • Current qualification as a Radiation Protection/Chemistry Technician with a nuclear utility
  • Minimum of 2 years working experience involving Radiation Protection/Chemistry
  • Experience with Operation and maintenance of the following equipment:
  • Ion Chromatography (IC)
  • Flame and Furnace AA / ICP
  • Gas Chromatography
  • Liquid Scintillation counter
  • TOC analyzers
  • Spectrophotometers
  • Gamma Spectroscopy
  • Portable radiation/contamination survey instruments
  • Smear Counters
  • Experience with the use of a Chemistry Data Management System and/or Radiation Survey System
  • Experience with the generation of liquid and gaseous release permits
  • Strong team player with a focus on continual improvement


Specific Requirements:
  • This role requires the use of weight rated equipment, with max ratings ranging from 275lbs to 325lbs, in order to meet the essential functions of the job.
  • Must be able to obtain Nuclear Access
  • Respiratory physical
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds
  • Ability to meet essential job functions (climbing, lifting, pushing, pulling, ability to wear protective equipment, etc.)
  • This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
  • Willing to relocate to within site ERO response time of nuclear plant in order to meet Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
