Job description

Reporting to the Director of Athletics, the Assistant Athletic Director/Media Relations is responsible for assisting
the Athletic Director with general athletic administration and the day-to-day operations of the Athletic Program,
coupled with a leadership role in the area of sports information/media relations.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assist the Athletics Director with the goal of using marketing and promotions strategies in an effort to increase
    attendance at home games and events; create high-energy and fan-friendly game environments.

  • Provide on-site management for football and all winter sports.

  • Manage the athletic student work program.

  • Coordinate special initiatives: Hall of Fame Committee, Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA)
    events, and National College Athletic Association (NCAA) events.

  • Act as liaison between Shaw University athletic department and its constituents as well as local, regional and
    national media.

  • Write copy and coordinate production of media guide, CIAA booklets, season packet schedules, game
    programs.

  • Manage the Athletic website: game previews and recaps; update results with link to box scores; season
    previews and recaps. Providing in depth coach & student-athlete biographies, action & team shots, and timely
    sports' updates.

  • Ensuring the submission & updates of statistics of CIAA, NCAA, and local media on the Shaw Bears Website.

  • Maintain detailed and accurate all-time Shaw sports records.

  • Effectively report news and the business of the Intercollegiate Athletic department.

  • Manage Game Day and Fan Experience.

  • Any other duties assigned.


Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher learning, with a preference in area of Marketing,
    Promotions, Public Relations, Advertising, or other related fields.

  • Minimum of one year of related experience in event planning and implementation, promotional activities,
    marketing, public relations, or other related activities.

  • Minimum of three years' work experience at the collegiate level as a Sports Information Director.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Experience with sports statistical, NCAA & CIAA terminology.

  • Must process interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with coaches, athletes, media,
    collegiate faculty and staff.

  • Must process a good understanding of collegiate sports.

  • Must process an efficient time management style to ensure timely completion of duties as assigned.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

  • Proven ability to write sports related articles for media purposes.

  • Knowledge of journalism, mass communication, and/or public relations.

  • Knowledge of sports statistical terminology and software.

  • Knowledge of NCAA and CIAA terminology.

  • Intermediate to advanced computer software skills: Microsoft Excel, Word; StatCrew software, desktop
    publishing, web page management and creation.

Physical Demands:

Ability to sit or stand for up to 8 hours/day and use a computer. Some lifting (up to 25 pounds occasionally),
bending, and carrying. Specific vision abilities include the ability to use close vision. Ability to travel as
necessary. The employee is regularly required to talk and hear, and to use hands and fingers to handle or feel.
