Overview:

The ED Coding Business Specialist supports the ED coding program to ensure that Novant is in compliance with industry standards and guidelines. This position is expected to the subject matter expert for ED and OutPatient Infusion/Transitional Care charge entry. This position reviews edit queues to correct errors of charge entry, use of appropriate modifiers, appropriate charging of multiple IV sites, application of rules related to Left without Being Seen and Left before Treatment completed. Performs charge reconciliation for Emergency Department and Outpatient Infusion/Transitional Care units. Prints and assists with auditing EMTALA logs for all EDs in the North Carolina market. Evaluates and identifies front end- and back-end error trends for training needs and brings them to the attention of the Supervisor.

Qualifications:
  • Education: High School Diploma/GED required.
  • Experience: Minimum two years experience ED charge entry required. Three years of ED charge entry experience preferred.
  • Licensure/Certification/Registration: RHIA, RHIT or CPC (A.) Must secure minimum of one required. Certify within eighteen months of hire date required.
  • Additional Skills Required: Excellent Customer service skills. Extensive knowledge of CPT coding principles and guidelines. Extensive knowledge of regulations and policies pertaining to documentation, coding and billing. Must be detail oriented and analytical in nature. Working knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology, medical terminology. Strong leadership and interpersonal skills. Must be able to work during times of high volume and of unusual need as workload demands. Ability to drive/travel to multiple locations/facilities as needed.
  • Additional Skills Preferred: Ability to navigate CMS website for NCII edits, NCD lCD information as well as the Addendum B.
