This position is scheduled to be filled in Mid-2022. May graduates with an MS degree in Food Science or a related field are encouraged to apply.

Erlanger, KY is located in the Cincinnati, OH area. Relocation assistance is available.

MAIN FUNCTION:

We are looking for a self-motivated Fermentation Scientist who will focus on microbial fermentation research for flavor ingredient innovation and development. The ideal candidate needs to have extensive knowledge on understanding fermentation principles and hands-on experience in fermentation experiments, be able to work on multiple projects efficiently and also pay attention to details. This is a hands-on position involving operations of fermentation systems, assistance in downstream recovery processes and scale-up trials, with broad responsibilities and opportunities of working with a growing team in a collaborative work environment.

KEY SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:

* M.S. in Food Science, Dairy Science, Microbiology, Biochemistry or related field with at least 2 years experience in the food industry directly with enzymes or on fermentation technologies. Ph.D with industry experience is plus.
* Strong understanding of fermentation principles and engineering fundamentals relevant to bioprocess development of growing microorganisms in a bioreactor or on a solid support.
* Hands-on experience with the setup and operation of various microbial fermentation processes. Experience in food, dairy or plant based applications is preferred.
* Hands-on experience in chromatography analysis (LC, GC, LCMS, GCMS) is plus.
* Attention to details and an ability to work consistently and accurately.
* Demonstrate ability to design and perform experiments
* Proficient in standard computer programs (e.g. Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, MATLAB).
* Ability to deliver clear, compelling, and effective technical presentations to colleagues and manager
* Strong organization, problem-solving, and quantitative analysis skills are critical
* Excellent collaboration, communication (oral and written), and multitasking skills.
* Experience working in accordance with good laboratory practices and adhere to safe standards and practices.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK PERFORMED:

* Work closely with Manager and team members in experimental design and execution.
* Handle and work with a variety of microorganisms including bacteria, yeast and fungi. Prepare and maintain stocks of microbial strains.
* Develop seed preparation, inoculation, fermentation, sampling and assays protocols.
* Design and conduct small scale fermentation experiments on a solid support or in shake flasks and 1-10L bench top fermenters based on literature, knowledge and experience. Identify key factors affecting fermentation performance.
* Apply DoE approach in optimization experiments to improve fermentation performance.
* Perform microbiological, biochemical and chemical analysis as required.
* Develop detailed records of experiment. Collect, process and analyze data.
* Write research reports, prepare and deliver technical presentations.
* Prepare tech transfer documents and provide technical support for scale up as needed
* Assist in downstream processing development as needed.
* Maintain laboratory equipment and instruments.
* This position will contribute as a member of a growing team focused on flavor research. Collaboration with flavorists, analytical scientists, chemists, and sensory scientists is required.
* This position may require some travel.
* This position may need flexible and short time in evenings or weekends for taking samples or adjusting control parameters.
