Job description

This position is responsible for overall management of a $7.9M+ budget for the Biological Resource Unit (BRU); day-to-day operations; directs Animal Husbandry Manager, Animal Facilities Manager, and Vet Services Supervisor with workload and goals; sets appropriate staffing levels, facility oversight for all locations; drives technological advancement to improve workflow efficiencies and accuracy; and leads other key initiatives on behalf of the Director of Operations and three veterinarians. Candidates for this position should be knowledgeable in compliance and overall animal health to ensure quality for research outcomes. Reports directly to the Administrative Director of Cores and the BRU Director of Operations. Serves as a backup to the Animal Husbandry Manager and the Animal Facilities Manager as needed. Works with veterinarians to meet compliance goals. Schedules and delegates work as assigned. This position is involved in capital planning for the BRU. Assists and participates in renovation or construction meetings. Plans, prepares, coordinates and implements key initiatives. Organizes and leads the BRU team to meet goals and other key metrics. Creates synergy and unison with all BRU team members to engage participation and team ideas for continuous improvement.

Responsibilities:

* Manages department personnel and operations which includes staffing, training, work flow analysis and performance management.
* Manages staffing to ensure appropriate allocation and compliance with goals and objectives.
* Monitors quality and financial performance.
* Ensures compliance with government health regulations, JCAHO guidelines, quality requirements and customer service standards.
* Recommends enhancement and cost saving strategies.
* Resolves interdepartmental issues to ensure consistency in quality, procedure and policy application.
* Develops, monitors and implements programs to enhance customer service, develop skills and improve scope of service.
* Analyzes programs and makes improvements.
* Participates in managers meetings and relevant committees as assigned.
* Other duties as assigned.

Education:

* Bachelor's Degree in Health Administration, Business Administration, or a related area.
* Master's Degree, Master of Laboratory Animal Science (MLAS) or MBA highly preferred.

Certifications:

* None required.

Complexity of Work:

* Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
* Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Work Experience:

* Minimum six years supervisory or management experience.
* Healthcare experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

* Manual dexterity sufficient to operate office equipment.
* May require extended periods of sitting, standing and walking.
* Must be able to walk to attend meetings; must have normal or corrected vision to normal range.
* Ability to clearly communicate by phone and in person.
* May occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.

Personal Protective Equipment:

* Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
