Job description

The Dayton Metro Library is seeking a full-time Newest Americans Specialist to join the Information Services team at the Main Library in downtown Dayton. The ideal candidate will be fluent in English and a second language and have some experience working with new Americans. This individual will be skilled at making community connections with organizations that support immigrant populations. The successful candidate will provide valuable input to the Library on how best to serve the Newest Americans, whether that is through thoughtful policy development, partnerships or program offerings. Essential Job Duties

  • Coordinates the development of programs for new Americans system-wide. Plans, implements and evaluates on-going programs and services and works with External Relations to prepare publicity. Participates in public relations activities such as tours, talks, and demonstrations to promote library use.
  • Provides service and maintain liaisons with community leaders, networking groups, and community agencies, attends community meetings, gives presentations.
  • Administers library assets relating to the New Americans Corner Collection, serving as a region-wide resource promoting related resources and services. Selects and deselects resources for the New Americans Corner Collection using subject background knowledge, knowledge of the collection, and awareness of patron needs.
  • Develops recommendations for new Americans services and provides input into policies affecting new Americans.
  • Provides advice and recommendations to public service staff for developing and maintaining a welcoming atmosphere for new American patrons.
  • Displays knowledge of the psychology of new Americans and keeps up with current trends. Provides system-wide training which increases awareness and understanding of and sensitivity to the needs of new Americans.
  • Provides Newest Americans library users with instruction in the use of library materials and resources.
  • Sets and maintains guidelines and objectives for library staff who work with new Americans. Conducts meetings, trains, and provides instruction and assistance for staff.
  • Prepares, submits and analyzes required department reports and budgets. Ensures proper records management. Attends applicable department meetings. Assists with system-wide programs, activities and initiatives.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. Such duties may include, but are not limited to, creating displays, maintaining online resources and performing circulation responsibilities.

Requirements:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general periodicals, professional journals, and policy and procedure manuals. Ability to write reports and business correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in a group and/or individual training environment.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of world languages, ESL, and other literature relevant to New Americans, periodicals, audio-visual materials, websites and other electronic media, and materials.
  • Knowledge of available new Americans materials and reader's interests.
  • Ability to plan and implement programs to support new Americans. Ability to determine patron information needs.
  • Knowledge of available and emerging technologies and their application to new American services. Ability to develop and deliver programs. Knowledge and understanding of the psychology of new Americans.
  • Valid Ohio driver's license, acceptable motor vehicle record, and continuous insurability required. Ability to drive vehicle.
  • Advanced degree (MLIS preferred) or its equivalent in education and experience is required.
  • Verbal and written fluency in English and a second language is required.
  • Schedule includes day time, evening and Saturday hours.

Compensation and Benefits: Starting hourly wage is $22.64 with an exceptional benefits package.
