Job description

We are seeking observant, compassionate, and energetic lifeguards to monitor all water activities and ensure the safety of all of our swimmers and visitors for employment at the City of Independence Civic Center and outdoor amenities when open. Part-time work schedules are available, including days, evenings and weekends.

In this role, you will be directly responsible for confirming that all patrons follow the necessary safety rules, and will also respond accordingly in the case of an emergency. You will play a key part in ensuring the wellbeing of all of our visitors while maintaining a fun and safe swimming environment.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Remain alert and keep a watchful eye on all activities that are occurring in and around the water

  • Educate and then enforce all safety rules of the facility in effort to prevent hazardous issues or accidents

  • Provide information, instructions, and directions to patrons who ask for clarification

  • Rescue drowning victims or other patrons who experience medical emergencies at the facility

  • Provide first aid, CPR or other life-saving care treatments to patrons when required

  • Identify and communicate any potential health, safety, or accident risks to the facility supervisor

  • Assist with setting up the facility for various water classes and activities

  • Record the facility's participation numbers and compile the necessary daily reports

  • Collaborate with other lifeguards and facility staff to maintain safety of the environment and uphold our positive reputation

  • Attend all staff meetings as required

Requirements and Qualifications
  • Accomplished swimmer with the physical fitness level necessary to cope with challenging water conditions

  • CPR certification and other relevant medical training in emergency treatment protocol for various injuries

  • Keen attention to detail with the ability to thoroughly monitor numerous different areas at once

  • Ability to react appropriately in stressful, high-pressure, and fast-paced emergency situations

  • Compassionate and service-oriented attitude with a passion for maintaining the safety of the facility

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills to successfully communicate with patrons and other staff members

  • Willingness to work independently and as part of a team

  • Must be at least 16 years of age and successfully complete background check and drug screen
