TITLE

Senior Lab Technician, Green Coffee

LOCATION

Orrville, OH

REPORTS TO

Manager, Green Coffee Materials

POSITION SUMMARY

This role has responsibility for much of the day to day operation of the Corporate Cupping Room. This includes the preparation and quality evaluations of green coffee deliveries, green coffee inventory, flavor standards and soluble powders. Sample load is constant with daily time pressure to complete evaluations. This role requires meticulous adherence to testing and methodology protocols to ensure that the data collected is reliable and accurate. The data collected from the samples is used to make usage decisions daily and impacts the quality of finished coffee products, provides the data needed for financial claims against suppliers or rejection of deliveries, and provides direction for future purchasing decisions and new materials.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Daily Lab / Cupping Room operations

• Daily prioritization of the samples and testing required to meet daily time pressures.
• Logging and tracking of each individual sample.
• Data analysis and data entry for all required QC tests.
• Proficiency with Oracle purchasing and inventory systems used to identify and prioritize daily work
• Support the Cupping Room schedule to ensure adequate QC coverage to meet the business requirements

Technical and Analytical

• Preparing samples for various laboratory tests and entering results into business systems.
• Complete technical testing of incoming raw materials and evaluate the raw materials for adherence to purchasing specifications.
• Support Data Co-ops with internal sites to ensure calibration between the sites.

Organizational

• Prepare samples for supplier visits from source countries around the world.
• Develop & implement work process improvement projects
• Work collaboratively with Green Coffee Sub-teams & External contacts (Planning, Materials, Projects, Silo, Key Vendors/Suppliers)

Troubleshooting / Investigations

• Participate in why-why analysis, troubleshooting, and Quality investigations related to samples

Training to Develop Coffee Cupping Skills

• Participate in daily disposition cupping sessions and complete weekly cupping training sessions.
• Develop detailed knowledge of coffee processing, coffee classifications, cup flavor profiles by origin/quality.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Education

• Associates Degree is required, a Bachelors Degree is preferred

Experience

• 1-2 years analyst, lab, technical or quality assurance experience
• Strong attention to detail and capacity to learn data entry for multiple systems & scenarios
• Demonstrated capability in analyzing data/situations & problem solving
• Strong organization and time management skills
• Communication: Strong oral and written skills are required
• Strong computer skills - Microsoft Office
• Demonstration of a "flow to the work" mentality to meet the changing business needs
• Ability to work independently to drive own results
