Job description

Central Ohio Primary Care Physicians is seeking a Technical Lab Assistant for our Central Lab in Westerville, OH. The Technical Lab Assistant provides assistance to the laboratory team in processing clinical specimens, answering phones, batching reference work and culture set up. This position helps with patient care and processing in the draw station. This position is responsible for assisting the technical staff in receiving and storing reagents. Responsibilities include working with the technical staff in performing Waived testing and loading samples on Analyzers when applicable. The Technical Lab Assistant also assists the technical team in reagent inventory and management. This is a full time role working Monday- Friday 8a-5p.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with receiving, logging, sorting, counting and processing specimens. Prepare specimens for technical testing. Preserve sample integrity and create split samples when appropriate.
  • Retrieve samples for add-on testing.
  • Perform waived laboratory procedures and tests after training and competency have been documented.
  • Responsible for sorting, scanning and filing requisitions.
  • Prepare batches for Reference Lab Testing.
  • Stock inventory and maintain a clean work area. Dispose biohazard material in the correct container and rotate biohazard boxing up for removal.
  • Customer service duties answer phone, look up results, fax or print results, page phlebotomist, etc. including problem resolution.
  • Perform specimen culture set-ups in Micro and use Isola for urine culture setup.
  • Attend required meetings and participate in committees as requested.
  • Assist patients with phlebotomy needs in the lab draw station. if applicable.
  • Assist in receiving, unpacking, and storing reagents required for patient testing.
  • Take reagent inventory to discard outdates and keep track of reagents that need to be replenished.
  • Assist in loading samples on Analyzers when needed. Assist in loading reagents on analyzers for testing.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • All other assigned duties.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Licensures & Certifications

  • Required: HS Diploma or GED
  • Required: 1 year of experience working in a laboratory or healthcare setting

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques to perform waived kit testing.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment for centrifuging and testing, etc.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate with the lab staff.
  • Proficient phlebotomy skills including pediatric patients, both venipuncture and fingerstick.
  • Skill in keeping accurate records.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.
  • Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to follow written protocols.
  • Ability to work independently or as a team member.
  • Ability to communicate clearly.
  • Ability to be adaptable to a changing work environment.
