The Health Underwriter is involved in reviewing, assessing, and making recommendations of applications for individual health insurance, setting conditions for, or denying coverage. Also involved is communication from agents via telephone, email, mail, and/or fax along with interoffice communications.

Position Responsibilities:

  • This individual will utilize established underwriting guidelines of various individual health products and provide proper ratings.
  • Gathering and assessing background information in order to effectively assess the risk involved.
  • Calculating possible risk.
  • Liaising with specialists, such as doctors, for risk assessment.
  • Gathering information and various types of reports (e.g. medical records, prescription histories) from specialists.
  • Keeping detailed and accurate records of applications underwritten and decisions made.
  • Making underwriting decisions based on medical information submitted to company.

Skills and Qualifications:
  • College degree or equivalent with minimum of 3 years of Health Underwriting experience.
  • Intermediate level of proficiency with Microsoft Office ( Word, Excel, and Outlook ).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Detail oriented and works with high degree of accuracy.
  • Highly organized and flexible.
  • Ability to multitask and meet changing deadlines.
  • Must be self-directed and able to complete job duties with limited supervision.
