Job description
Under the general direction of the Chemistry and Physics Department Chair, the full-time tenure-track assistant professor position for the 2 academic year will teach a diverse selection of seven courses annually, including introductory physics lecture and lab, and introductory physical science lecture and lab.
The candidate will be a talented, research-active physics scholar who has proven instructional skills with a wide audience of undergraduate learners. The candidate will serve as the main physics instructor for the College, teaching a physics class plus lab each semester that serves as a curricular anchor for chemistry, biochemistry, and pre-medical students. The candidate will also teach an annual physical science course with lab designed for the College's education majors. The candidate's final annual course will be either an honors course or first year seminar course. The candidate will be an instructor interested in helping to prepare science majors for post-college work and studies, as well as a scholar who supports the liberal arts and helps connect non-science majors with STEM topics. This position provides a unique opportunity for a physicist to introduce and promote science for a wide audience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Teaching (70%)
- Teaches PHYS 101 and PHYS 102 - General Physics, algebra-based, lecture and laboratory
- Teaches PHYS 203 and PHYS 204 - Introductory Physics, calculus-based, lecture and laboratory
- Teaches PHSC 101 - Introduction to Physical Science, lecture and laboratory
- Teaches one additional course in the Honors Program or the First Year Seminar Program
- Plans course syllabus and assignments for semester of study to meet Hood College and departmental curriculum requirements utilizing a variety of teaching techniques.
- Instructs students in course content and provides high-impact learning opportunities in and out of the classroom to achieve course objectives.
- Encourages class participation and provides assistance as appropriate to students in completing class assignments. Manages classroom interactions and establishes and maintains a climate that encourages learning.
- Critiques performance on various assignments to measure the quality of learning, to build critical thinking skills, to challenge students' assumptions, and to reinforce concepts, which may include practical application of new skills.
- Maintains regular office hours and contact with students as appropriate. Works with student to address problems and resolve issues.
- Accompanies students on field trips or other off-campus learning opportunities as appropriate.
- Determines grades for assignments and for overall achievement in class. Submits assessment data as required for program and department-level outcomes reports.
- The standard teaching load at Hood College is seven courses per year; laboratory sections count in this calculation.
- Responsible for all laboratory preparation.
- Other teaching-related duties as assigned.
Professional Development (20%)
- Develops and maintains an active research program involving students at the undergraduate level;
- Actively pursues opportunities for professional development related to teaching and research, including presenting at conferences and workshops as funds are available;
- Presents research findings as posters, workshops, oral presentations and peer-reviewed publications in journals or conference proceedings;
- Develops grant applications (both internal and external);
- Participates in department- and college-wide programs such as the Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program or the S-STEM program;
- Actively engages in ongoing faculty development programs to refine and broaden pedagogical skills.
Service (10%)
- Advises students;
- Provides service to the college by serving on departmental and college-wide committees;
- Provides service to the broader discipline;
- Represents the department and the College at recruitment events, open houses, and other events as requested.

Education and/or Experience
A Ph.D. in physics or related field is required. Prior teaching experience in a higher education job and/or a postdoctoral appointment is preferred.
