Philabundance has grown since our inception over 35 years ago; we are among the most recognizable and impactful hunger relief organizations in the Delaware Valley. This year, together with our network of agency partners, we will distribute approximately 50 million pounds of food to our communities in need. However, despite our growth food insecurity remains at near record levels. Philadelphia, the poorest large city in the United States, is home to some of the highest poverty and food insecurity rates in the nation. Philabundance made the bold move in 2019 to expand our mission to include Ending Hunger for Good initiatives aimed at longer term solutions to hunger.
Position Summary:
CPA is required.
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller is responsible for the accounting operations of Philabundance, to include the production of accurate financial reports, management, maintenance and data integrity of the system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk.
The Controller will direct the accounting functions, including leading the monthly close, tax return filings, annual audit, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and manage various treasury functions as well as collaborate with team members to improve controls and processes.
The Controller will support the CFO in engaging the board's audit and finance committees around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements
  • Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures
  • Coordinate all audit activity including providing support to the CFO in engaging the board's audit and finance committees around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery
  • Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants
  • Manage organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with the program vice presidents; continuously collaborate with program leadership to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations
  • Manage and track the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of Philabundance's financial status
  • Assist leadership in the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate
  • Direct ownership of the monthly close including the review of all general ledger transactions for accuracy, management of bank and investment account reconciliation process, preparation of workpapers, and journal entries to meet deadlines as necessary and complete quarterly board reporting package in an accurate and timely manner
  • Lead and manage tax filings as well as provide information for audits and 1099's to vendors
  • Manage and mentor staff including: Leverage strengths of the current finance team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training programs to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals.
  • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment
  • Other responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree and CPA required; MBA preferred
  • Min. 7 years in accounting, including Min. of 3 years managing and developing others in a dedicated leadership role
  • Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments
  • A track record in grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting of government, corporate and foundation grants is essential
  • Technology savvy with experience selecting and overseeing software installations and managing relationships with software vendors; advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software including Microsoft office suite, advanced excel talent
  • Strategic vision for the department and the value to the organization, progressive and resourceful forwarding thinking approaches expected
  • Commitment to recruiting, mentoring, training, and retaining a diverse team; the foresight and ability to delegate accordingly
  • Keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills which allows for strategic data interpretation versus. simple reporting
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, board, or other outside partners
  • Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers
  • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and unwavering commitment to mission; a proactive, hands-on strategic thinker who will own, in partnership with the CFO, the responsibility for finance

Essential Job Functions:
  • Bend, stop, crouch, climb, stand, sit, walk, and turn/pivot throughout an 8-hour shift, 5 days a week; Bend, stoop/squat, and walk intermittently throughout the day.
