JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Division of General Internal Medicine is seeking part-time fitness instructors to deliver a group exercise program that is being tested in a research study. The role will entail learning an exercise routine and then leading classes in that routine. There are two exercise routines, one focused on strength and aerobic training and the other is a routine consisting of modified sports that participants (generally ages 21-50) will play together. In the game-based program the instructor will function similar to a recreational sports team coach, teaching skills, leading drills and encouraging participants who perform those skill games the coach will supervise. The candidate will participate in a paid training, lasting 1-2 days, to learn the exercise program. Exercise sessions are expected to last 60 minutes and be held on weeknights and Saturday morning and afternoons. Instructors are expected to follow a research protocol with no more than minimal deviations, given that the study is designed to test a protocol. Travel to/from exercise sites is required in the Penn State Hershey catchment area, including as far west as Mechanicsburg and as far east as Lebanon and Lancaster. A flexible schedule (some evenings and possibly some weekends) is required. Candidate must have a friendly, outgoing personality and enthusiasm. The part time position is for 5 hours a week for 12 months. Experience/Education Guidelines: No specific education or training is required. Candidates must have experience in either team sports or in personal fitness.
