Job Summary:
The Lab Manager will be under the supervision of a Laboratory Director/designee, performs required quality controls, obtains specimen collection from patients, performs established clinical tests and procedures, interprets and reports tests results, maintains all required documentation to maintain compliance and performs equipment maintenance.
Essential Lab Manager Functions:
- Reviews and follows requests for tests and procedures prescribed by providers.
- Draws and processes specimens promptly and in compliance with established procedure.
- Identifies and labels specimens with a minimum of 2 patient identifiers.
- Follows established procedures when performing chemistry, hematology, urine analysis, or serology tests and/or any other procedures.
- Monitors quality control procedures for all tests.
- Reviews accuracy and completeness of test results before reporting
- Checks validity by evaluation of quality control data, previous tests, and duplicate testing.
- Reports and documents critical values to the provider.
- Performs routine and preventative maintenance, as needed
- Ensures that laboratory equipment is in working order.
- Maintains logs and other documentation accordingly.
- Accurately send out any reference labs with correct specimen collection requirement
- Report reference lab results to ordering provider.
- Maintains confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis.
- Provides service direct to patients while maintaining a positive patient relations atmosphere.
- Follows procedures for using precautions when involved in direct patient contact or when handling potentially infectious materials.
- Follows the safety policies and guidelines
- Interacts with Medical Staff members and other departments on a continuous basis.
- Maintains good relations and open communication with all personnel.
- Perform other assigned duties requested by management
- Under direct supervision of Lab Director/Designee
- Oversee all daily laboratory functions
- Oversee daily and monthly Quality Controls are performed and are within acceptable range. Any unacceptable QC will be documented and corrective actions will be performed
- Oversee semi-annual Calibration Verification are performed
- Oversee daily maintenance, documentation logs, and documentation retention.
- Oversee daily inventory, purchase order documentation, and receivables are labeled with initials and date received.
- Responsible for training new employees, re-training, and/or training of new test systems
- Communicate with all Lab Personnel any/all lab updates - to include updates from manufacturer, Lab Director/Designee, new test systems, new policy and procedures, problems with analyzers and/or other test systems, etc
- Communicates effectively with lab staff and maintain good relations with all departments
- Oversee Proficiency Testing is performed and treated as a patient sample, PT results reviewed prior to submitting for evaluation, PT attestation form signed by each performing lab tech, and all other pertinent requirements involving Proficiency testing.
Qualifications:
- Management: Ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements; conducting laboratory inspections as necessary; reviewing laboratory protocols of all research groups (internal and external) so as to understand all projects occurring within the lab; overseeing and disciplining staff as required.
- Operations: Monitoring inventory and ordering supplies (chemicals, reagents, personal protective equipment, etc.) as necessary; scheduling laboratory and equipment time for staff; acting as a liaison between staff and key stakeholders.
- Training: Ensuring that all team members have been trained to use laboratory equipment, software, and supplies safely and efficiently.
- Safety: Updating the lab safety plan and safety data sheets (SDS) as necessary; scheduling safety training for new hires or team members entering new roles; enforcing policies around personal protective equipment.
- Maintenance: Overseeing the cleansing and sanitizing of the lab; ensuring all equipment and instruments function correctly, and initiating repair or maintenance of said equipment as necessary.
