Senior Engineering Manager Summary

As a Senior Engineering Manager at Marqeta, you'll manage a team of engineers building and maintaining the core processing features of the credit card authorization flow which are a critical piece of Marqeta's business. You'll be responsible for the customer experiences of Marqeta's largest customers, enabling them to grow and scale. You'll be working across a larger engineering team coordinating work, aligning on goals, and delivering on the value of the Marqeta platform. You'll be hands-on with the codebase when needed, but recognize when it's best to let your team drive. You'll also be responsible for facilitating and driving technical innovation and participating in providing technical alignment across engineering teams.

By being accountable for your team's output, you'll collect and refine metrics around product delivery and move the team in the right direction. You'll encourage a culture where everyone's perspective is valued and you can productively manage conflicts when they arise.

You'll champion engineering excellence and hold a high bar while recruiting and promoting top talent within your team.

What You'll Do

  • Lead teams responsible for maintaining and developing products under the core processing product area
  • Work cross-functionally to develop and execute a roadmap to take the product to the next level
  • Conduct code reviews
  • Bring new ideas, designs, and tools to the table, drive technical discussions and decision making related to the development and technology stack
  • Partner with senior leaders and executives on matters regarding several functional areas
  • Establish and promote best practices across teams
  • Set clear expectations for the team
  • Support, develop and grow an exceptional team
  • Support ongoing career development through positive coaching, goal setting and feedback
  • Identify and develop potential leaders and high-level individual contributors and develop succession plans for the team
  • Build and maintain a positive environment and team culture, a place where engineers feel they are doing the best work of their careers
  • Build One Marqeta through proactive recruiting: sell candidates, network, assist in headcount planning, etc.
What We're Looking For
  • 8+ years experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 6+ years of experience with an advanced degree. In lieu of a degree, 10+ years of relevant experience may suffice
  • 5+ years experience leading large teams or multiple teams
  • Experience leading teams developing and scaling microservices using modern cloud technologies
  • Experience leading significant, complex, cross-functional projects
  • Experience utilizing resources across multiple teams to produce high-quality results
  • Experience holding teams accountable to execute in challenging, complex environments
  • A passion for solving complex problems and navigating ambiguity
  • The ability to articulate clear strategies, plans, goals, objectives and trade-offs across multiple teams to drive alignment and action
  • The proven ability to lead and grow an engineering organization in a rapidly changing environment
  • The ability to contribute to strategies and initiatives that build and reinforce our culture and reward our Values

  • Experience with payments or the FinTech space
  • Experience leading teams that focus on both software and database engineering
