Job description
Basic Function:
Primary function of the Lab Analyst is to perform a variety of tasks on medium voltage and high voltage cable failure sites. These failure sites are in the form of short lengths (1 - 3 feet) of cable, or thin (cross-sectional) cable wafers. These tasks require the use of band saws, hand tools (such as needle nose pliers, hand knives, etc.), cable cutting devices (such as tabletop lathes, microtomes) laboratory equipment such as microscopes, analytical balances and hot plates and dimensional measuring devices (such as optical comparators). The Lab Analyst is also required to be proficient in the use of a PC to generate written reports, and to enter and manipulate test data in the departmental database. These tasks constitute 90% of the Lab Analyst's time.
A minor secondary function of the Lab Analyst position is to perform departmental operational housekeeping tasks, which require the skills to operate a forklift truck. These housekeeping tasks are retrieval of cable sample reels for testing, disposal of scrap cable sample reels after testing, office trash removal and transport of testing equipment and operational supplies to the MTC.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
* Preparation of cable failure sites for examination.
* Examination of cable failure sites.
* Data Entry via PC (Excel©, MTC Proprietary Database, PowerPoint©).
* Report Generation via PC (Word©, MTC Proprietary Database).
* Maintain work areas & equipment in acceptable condition.
* Provide backup electrical testing support in all other department areas.
* Provide departmental housekeeping support tasks.

* High School degree or equivalent. Some formal laboratory training preferred. Experience in electrical testing field or in a related area is a plus.
* PC literate; experience with Microsoft Word© and Excel© office software.
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
* Requires visual and mental attention to details with regards to working around cutting equipment, hot surfaces and materials, high voltage test equipment and accurate recording of results.
* Must have sufficient motor skills to prepare cable samples for examination, electrical tests, and operation of a forklift.
* Requires some lifting and general operation of larger tools and equipment.
* Somewhat disagreeable working conditions at times due to excess heat, fumes, water, and noise.
Other
Work involves possible exposure to lethal high voltages in electrical test areas, requiring the use of automatic and manual grounding protection.
