Job description

Community Impact Newspaper is seeking a Senior Accountant to oversee the accounting functions for our newspaper and affiliated companies. The Senior Accountant will have excellent analytical skills with thorough knowledge of accounting principles to analyze reports and forecasts. The ideal candidate forms relationships with all departments across the organization to strengthen ability to cross-functionally solve problems.

We're looking for a candidate with knowledge and the following skills:

  • Strong attention to detail and good organizational skills
  • Ability to prioritize to meet deadlines with high degree of accuracy and minimal supervision
  • Demonstrates a solutions-oriented approach to resolving issues; innovates process improvements
  • Strong computer and Excel skills; experience with NetSuite and Adaptive Insights a plus but not required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Acts with integrity and creates an environment of trust and mutual respect
  • Flexibility in performing tasks outside of basic responsibilities
  • Visual and hearing acuity


Essential Job Functions:

  • Responsible for timely completion of assigned month-end close activities, including preparation of journal entries, calculation of accruals, reconciliation of balance sheet accounts and financial statement preparation
  • Maintain financial records for affiliated companies by analyzing balance sheets and general ledger accounts
  • Analyze and review accounting data for reasonableness and material errors
  • Perform monthly analysis of budget to actual variances, financial trends and outlooks
  • Assist with daily invoicing, accounts receivable and accounts payable
  • Strategically partner with the Sales and Print teams to price custom quotes and maximize margins
  • Own Sales and Use Tax Filings
  • Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls
  • Complete special projects and other assignments from the Controller or CFO
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP principles
  • Maintain positive working relationships with team and customers
  • Understand and adhere to the policies and procedures of Community Impact Newspaper

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum Bachelors' degree in Accounting or related field
  • 3-5 years accounting experience
  • Working knowledge of US GAAP
  • CPA and/or MBA a plus but not required

Community Impact Newspaper delivers 36 hyperlocal editions to more than 2.5 million homes throughout the Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Phoenix and Nashville areas. Each of the markets we serve has its own dedicated editorial, sales and design staff, just like a small, traditional community newspaper.

But we're not small at all. We are a 200-person news enterprise that produces its own product 'our printing plant opened in 2016. Why are we so successful? We believe most people don't want right- or left-leaning news, just the news, and preferably from their own backyard.
