Job Summary:
The Systems Engineer works as a member of the Systems Engineering team to identify optimized product solutions and configurations for customers of the Residential HVAC & Supply business. Specifically, the candidate will not only work as part of a cross-functional team to identify customer needs and innovative solutions, but then also trial those solutions in the field.
Core Job Responsibilities (others may be added):
Systems Engineering Tasks
- Drive clear MRD requirements Pre-G0 by partnering with Product Management and Platform Engineering teams to provide system simulation and optimization
- Use data analysis tools such as Alteryx and Tableau to create data visualizations to drive awareness and decision making for the Res HVAC & Supply Business
- Work across PGTs to optimize overall system design to maintain relative cost competitiveness vs competitive landscape
- Partner with marketing teams to maintain competitive positioning data for major platforms
- Own and maintain product attribute databases
- Use T-Rex (refrigeration simulation software) batch simulation capabilities to identify optimal system construction
- Lead brainstorming exercises to help the product teams select optimal executions of new technologies.
- Work collaboratively across platform engineering teams using set-based design principles to brainstorm & identify optimal design solutions (cost, timing & quality)
- Work with the Systems Engineering Leader and Director to establish product design guidelines for Res HVAC Product Modular Architecture with Platform Engineering teams.
- Assist the Systems Engineering Leader and Director in developing the Systems Engineering Standard Work Process
Field Trial Ownership
- Develop & own the process for applying data acquisition to HVAC equipment in the Residential Home environment. Develop the standard for a physical tool as well as the process.
- Collaborate with Trane Technologies Engineering & Technology centers to develop dashboards and analytical tools to review field trial data for the "fleet" of field trial systems.
- Interact with homeowners, dealers and customer service on a regular basis to gather data on the performance of Trane Residential HVAC equipment.
- Work collaboratively with platform NPD teams to analyze field trial data. Proactively work with NPD teams to identify data and failure modes of interest.
- Use tools such as Tableau to create data visualizations for field trial data
- Work with Field Service Representatives and other customer support teams across the US to proactively identify field trial sites and key applications of product.
- Travel to key job sites to observe & record relevant data from field installations to further develop customer insights & product application knowledge (Ethnographic research)
- Summarize & collaborate with Systems Engineering Leadership and other Senior Engineers to assess implications of observations
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Aerospace Engineering is required.
- Experience in HVAC (Residential or Commercial) or other skilled trade not required but preferred.
Key Competencies:
- The ideal candidate will have significant experience with data analysis tools such as Alteryx, Tableau and Excel. While these skillsets are not specifically required, a willingness and desire to learn is required.
- Intellectual curiosity for performing analysis and solving problems.
- Results-oriented individual with an emphasis placed on achieving overall team performance.
- Demonstrated experience in application of data acquisition either from previous work history or collegiate projects a plus.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Works effectively in an open consensus-oriented team environment.
- Conflict management skills.
- Electrical wiring and/or controls experience a plus.
