Job Description

The Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics (BEAM) at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure line faculty position at the assistant or associate professor level, effective August 2022. Applications are welcomed in all areas of engineering mechanics, including dynamical systems, solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, and biomechanics, with expertise in theoretical, computational, and/or experimental methods. Preference will be given to applications with scholarly interests that include application of engineering mechanics to problems in human health. We are seeking candidates motivated to contribute to a collegial, interdisciplinary community with a strong tradition of both fundamental and applied research, high quality teaching and mentoring.

BEAM is an interdisciplinary department with faculty having broad interests spanning engineering, science, mathematics, and medicine. Offering BS, MS, and PhD degrees in engineering mechanics and in biomedical engineering, the department currently has 42 faculty members, and is home to over 200 undergraduate and nearly 200 graduate students.

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. degree in engineering mechanics or a closely aligned field, a strong record of academic accomplishments and a proven ability to work collaboratively, experience with and commitment to interdisciplinary research and instruction, and a willingness to expand disciplinary boundaries to address complex technical and societal challenges. The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check as well as documentation of COVID-19 vaccination or receive approval from the university for a vaccination exemption due to a medical condition or sincerely held religious belief.
