Job description
Job purpose
This position reports to the Chief Accounting Officer and is to ensure the accurate and timely monthly accounting close process and SEC filings. The position will be located in Herndon, VA. This individual will have the responsibility to direct all the activities and processes during the close and ensure that financial statements are delivered to all stakeholders, responsibility for all SEC reporting, and overseeing the integration of all new acquisitions and greenfield locations. The Controller will also be part of a team that creates and implements policies and procedures to make the close and reporting processes more efficient and accurate. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in SEC reporting, equity-based compensation accounting, and internal controls, along with excellent leadership and communication skills.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Accountability for all accounting matters for Corporate entity.
- Ensure the accurate and timely reporting of the financial statements on a monthly basis.
- Consolidates all financial results for all the regions within the business.
- Proper and timely review of all account reconciliations for Corporate and Canada.
- Prepare the cash flow statement on a quarterly basis.
- Prepare and organize the monthly close calendar and SEC reporting calendar, which involves coordination with the external auditors, executives and members of the finance, legal and investor relations departments.
- SOX compliance - document any new controls or changes to existing control processes related to Corporate accounting. Review control processes quarterly and ensure compliance. Assist with the coordination of annual SOX audit with both Internal and External Auditors.
- Implement, document and maintain adequate and effective processes to improve the close and reporting cycles to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
- Assists the accounting function in acquisition analysis, acquisition integration and purchase price accounting, including the opening balance sheet and valuation.
- Assists in ensuring the accuracy of the organization's financial results and provides required information to external and internal auditors.
- Assists in developing and publishing Board financial reports.
- Represent accounting operations and utilize analytical, strategic, and research information in meetings with senior management.
- Develop, train and mentor staff in the accounting department.
- Assist Chief Accounting Officer with preparation of all external reporting requirements as needed.
- Assists in financial decisions and protect assets by establishing policies, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls.
- Assists in the compliance with local, state, and federal budgetary reporting requirements.
- Accountability for all aspects of SEC filings, including leading all activities for quarterly and annual financial statements and any other SEC filings, and assist with the proxy statement process.
- Leads all research of SEC related issues, develops appropriate company tactical plans and white papers.
- Responsible for equity accounting on subsidiary system and equity administration process and coordinates with Total Rewards team on all equity matters.
- Prepare and review disclosure checklists
- Prepare/compile supporting documents for all SEC filings and ensure all approvals are obtained before filing in compliance with SOX
- Responsible for EPS calculation
- Assists in all investor relations activities such as financial press releases conference call scripts and presentations.
- Work closely with the legal department and confer with outside counsel for SEC reporting and proxy matters.
- Minimum 10+ years of finance or accounting experience, preferably within the distribution industry.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related degree. Advanced degree preferred.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required.
- "Big 4" & SEC reporting experience preferred.
- Comprehensive knowledge of business acumen, financial concepts, and procedures
