The Chemist/Technical Service Representative position supports Evonik's Functional Fibers Technical Service and Product Development activities for the paper and textile industries. Our Richmond location is the site of Evonik's Global Tissue Competency Center, a state of the art tissue/fluff pulp testing laboratory fully equipped with the most modern tissue/fluff pulp test equipment. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading laboratory activities to support customer projects and new innovation. The position will involve in-depth training on specialized laboratory equipment and techniques including Rapid Kothen hand sheet preparation, Thwing Albert strength tester, Emtec tissue softness analyzer, GATS absorption testing equipment for tissue applications. The successful candidate will operate TAPPI test equipment for testing absorption in fluff pulp, Faraday cage static charge and decay testing and various spray on application instruments.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Design and carry out laboratory experiments to support tissue, fluff pulp and textile applications for customer technical service and new product development projects.
• Perform all laboratory experiments in a safe manner. Follow Standard Operating Procedures for all industry testing and write new SOPs for newly acquired lab equipment.
• Diligent record keeping of all laboratory activities and incorporation into the Electronic Notebook System. This role may include work to support new patent applications.
• Communication of test results with internal regional and global product development teams and external customers.
• Respond to business manager and customer requests in a timely manner on technical questions, product suggestions and project updates. Communication may be by email, phone or virtual meetings.
• Review literature and patents in the tissue, fluff pulp and textile industry and bring new ideas to support application technology and new product innovation.

REQUIREMENTS

• BS in Chemistry or Related Field.
• 1-3 Years of Experience in the Chemical Industry is Preferred.
• Tissue or Textile Application Knowledge/Experience is Beneficial. Previous Customer Technical Service Experience Desired.
• Good Laboratory Bench and Math Skills.
• Skilled in Oral, Written and Electronic Communication of Technical information.
• Experience working in MS Office, including Outlook, Word Teams and power Point.
