Position Summary: Under the direction of the Senior Scientist, the Research Chemist I will work independently and with other department's team members to accomplish the goals of the R&D Department and MLI. This position partners with R&D team members for the innovation of new products and applications for existing products for current and potential customers. The Research Chemist I will demonstrate professional appearance, behavior and attitude at all times while performing his/her job duties.
Schedule: Monday-Friday 8am-5pm, on-site, Moses Lake WA
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Follow safety procedures and regulations.
- Follow written procedures for laboratory experiments and analysis.
- Interact well within the group/department.
- Interact well with other groups/departments as needed.
- Critically evaluate procedures and identify potential issues/inconsistencies.
- Assist in resolving issues in procedures.
- Take on additional duties - Lab Safety Officer, Rep. to Safety Council.
- Formulate additional procedures as necessary - determining the difference between new procedure vs. amendment.
- Prepare reports - presentations or written documents - for internal purposes.
- Assist in formulating test plans for projects.
- Other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills & Ability:
- Bachelor of Science in chemistry, chemical engineering or a related discipline such as biology or physics required.
- Master's degree in chemistry or chemical engineering is highly preferred.
- One to two years of relevant experience in an industrial or academic setting (preferred).
- Strong written and oral communication skills including the demonstrated ability to read and implement written work procedures such as MLI Standard Operating Procedures and published standard methods such as ASTM methods, and chemical literature with minimal direct supervision.
- Working knowledge of computers and MS Office software.
- Working knowledge of arithmetic and grammar.
- Demonstrated ability to:
- Read, understand apply information in Material Safety Data Sheets to ensure safe handling and use of chemicals and laboratory apparatus.
- Follow written and verbal instructions in English.
- Manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously in order to meet established deadlines.
- Work as a team and/or independently.
- Perform tasks with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Working Conditions: Duties are generally performed indoors in an office/lab and high purity manufacturing environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate. When working in the presence of safety hazards, the employee is expected to follow company safety rules and use proper personal protective equipment such as: hardhat, safety glasses and full leather shoes, etc. MLI is an alcohol and drug free work place.

The employee may occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds without assistance and with assistance of greater weight. Specific vision abilities required are; color perception, close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
