Overview
Our client is a diverse, global company and is one of the largest solutions providers to the global food processing industry. The largest food processors within the fruit, vegetable, meat, poultry, seafood and bakery industries are among their customers.
The ideal candidate will be responsible for automated system strategy, design, development, support, and training of automation and mechatronic systems. The position supports the team objective of rapidly developing and commercializing reliable, high-performance, cost-effective automated and mechatronic systems for the food processing industry. The results of the position have a critical impact on the business objectives and goals of our client.
Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Percent of Time Spent:
The engineer will work in concert with the Director of Technology, Director of Mechanical Engineering and Business Development, the Product Line Manager (PLM), other key engineering, operations, application specialists, sales marketing colleagues help assure system performance, customer satisfaction, internal training, project completion, and profitable growth of the automation products portfolio.
This leader
- Provides analytical, kinematic, statistical, and other complex analysis of systems and develops algorithms, models, or programming solutions for problems such as trajectory path planning, control systems, dynamic response, and stability of systems
- Completes complex programming efforts working seamlessly with a mechatronics team
- Drives assigned projects to completion employing appropriate tools and management systems such as Lean/Agile/Scrum and/or Stage Gate processes
- Spends time in the customer use environment to understand challenges in production environments and bridging gaps between engineering and customers
- Identifies opportunities in control systems, system modeling, and hardware/software architectures that defend and extend the product offering across targeted food processing industry market segments
- Develops predictive engineering models to quantify and estimate system behaviors and performance
- Collaborates with key suppliers to identify ideal solutions
- Reviews product life cycle and roadmap for selected motion control components, actively managing obsolescence logistics in the motion control domain
- Proposes innovative R&D and product line maintenance projects that meet the client customers' needs while driving profitable growth
- Manages assigned areas of approved R&D and product line maintenance projects
Uses scientific and engineering principles, experience, constructive thinking and creativity to satisfy customers and to develop new products and solutions.
Researches and stays current on motion control technology advancement, customer needs and demands, and competitors' products. Evaluates existing and emerging robotic and automation technologies in the market
Solicits information and feedback from project management, sales and service to assist in development of new motion control systems, pursuing relentless continuous improvement (RCI) of current systems.
Responsibilities
- Able to develop and apply advanced technologies, engineering principles, theories, statistical tools and concepts using tools such as MathCAD, MATLAB, Mathematica, or equivalent

- Able to deliver effective presentations to critical/high level customers and effectively represent work group on review panels and cross-organizational teams

- Broad knowledge about the design and operation of systems outside of specialty
- In-depth knowledge of competing substitute technologies
- Has a broad skillset encompassing system design, implementation, and customer follow-through
- Master of Science with 15+ years of motion control experience preferred, or equivalent
- C and C++ programing experience preferred
- QNX or LINUX experience preferred
- Sercos III or EtherCAT experience preferred
- Gigabit Ethernet experience preferred
- Able to demonstrate completed projects, from kinematics up, for 2 to >4 axes of motion control
- Experience designing control systems and modeling dynamic systems preferred
This position requires quarterly travel to customer and non-customer sites in North America (an average of 3%- 4% travel annually, but higher in peak periods of new product launch and field test or field trouble shooting). Occasional visits to food processing environments are required. The position may require travel to other company sites and customer location, manufacturing sites when necessary, or to supplier or industry trade shows. Must be capable of working hands-on in a lab environment.
