Job description

Facebook Reality Labs brings together a world-class team of researchers, developers, and engineers to create the future of virtual and augmented reality, which together will become as universal and essential as smartphones and personal computers are today. And just as personal computers have done over the past 45 years, AR and VR will ultimately change everything about how we work, play, and connect. We are developing all the technologies needed to enable breakthrough AR glasses and VR headsets, including optics and displays, computer vision, audio, graphics, brain-computer interface, haptic interaction, eye/hand/face/body tracking, perception science, and true telepresence. Some of those will advance much faster than others, but they all need to happen to enable AR and VR that are so compelling that they become an integral part of our lives. Our internships are twelve (12) to sixteen (16), or twenty-four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year. This internship will be centered around light emitting layers grown by MOCVD/MOVPE. This internship will explore the impact of active region design on AR/VR display systems.

  • Explore the growth of III-Nitrides LEDs active region.
  • Develop short loop feedback methodology to assess the quality of active region layers and designs.
  • Perform performance analysis and comparison of different approaches/designs with respect to key figures of merit.
  • Explore the impact of new active region designs on AR/VR display systems.

  • Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a PhD degree in the field of Materials Science, Physics, or electrical engineering, or related field.
  • Hands-on experience with Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) or Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD)/Metal Organic Vapor Phase Epitaxy (MOVPE).
  • Comfort with scripting languages for scientific computing (e.g. python, MATLAB).
  • Knowledge of materials and fabrication techniques for visible photonics.
  • Hands-on experience with characterization techniques such as x-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL), Hall, secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS), capacitance-voltage (CV) etc.

  • 2+ years experience with operating MOCVD or MBE.
  • Experience with growing InGaN/GaN quantum well structures.
