Job description

As an Optical Scientist at Facebook, you will take a critical role in developing AR/VR systems. You will focus on developing advanced optical imaging and sensing systems for near eye displays, and will become part of a team exploring new concepts through design and fast iterative prototyping. A wide range of approaches will be explored combining electrical, mechanical, and optical techniques. We are looking for a hands-on engineer with a productive mindset who can apply their optics expertise to solve problems in creative, insightful ways. Our ideal candidate has a strong background in optical design, optical instrumentation, sensing and detection, and/or testing and metrology.

  • Design and implement metrology systems for optical characterization
  • Design and implement optical sensors for active calibration and closed loop control
  • Develop test strategies for optical sensing systems
  • Coordinate with vendors to prototype lens designs
  • Lead hardware calibration efforts of optical systems in collaboration with cross-functional partners
  • Model optical transmission, coating performance, and stray light analysis of both individual components, optical assemblies, and full optical systems using a combination of sequential and non-sequential methods
  • Model, analyze, and develop tolerances for optical distortions in both static and dynamic systems
  • Collaborate in a team environment across a diverse set of disciplines including Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, and Optics
  • Collaborate with the larger FRL team and provide creative leadership on computational display, imaging, and sensing technologies

  • PhD in Optics, Physics, Robotics, Applied Optics, or equivalent
  • 3+ years experience with optical design software, Code V, ZEMAX, FRED, or LightTools or Lumerical
  • 3+ years experience with optical instrumentation, emphasizing modeling and hardware prototyping
  • 3+ years of experience with optics technologies with one or more of the following: imaging, optical design, illumination, physical optics, stray light analysis, radiometry, and photometry
  • Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
  • Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment

  • Experience with sensor design, electronics, or circuit design
  • Experience with optical coatings and associated vendors
  • Experience with diffractive optics
  • Experience with COMSOL modeling
  • Experience maturing a design from proof of concept to volume prototypes or taking your own design into production
