Job description
Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.
Summary
The Reality Labs Team brings together a world-class team of researchers, developers, and engineers to create the future of virtual and augmented reality (VR, AR), which together will become as universal and essential as smartphones and personal computers are today. And just as personal computers have done over the past 45 years, AR and VR will ultimately change everything about how we work, play, and connect. We are developing all the technologies needed to enable breakthrough AR glasses and VR headsets, including optics and displays, computer vision, audio, graphics, brain-computer interfaces, haptic interaction, eye/hand/face/body tracking, perception science, and true telepresence. Some of those will advance much faster than others, but they all need to happen to enable AR and VR that are so compelling that they become an integral part of our lives.
In support of this vision, the Advanced Materials Team is seeking a highly motivated intern for 2022, with a focus on inorganic materials design and synthesis. The internship will focus on the preparation of novel nanoparticle- and sol-gel-based materials and their application in optical coatings. The intern will participate in the formulation of the R&D strategy, implementation of experimental approach, and communication of research findings to a large network of collaborators. This internship represents a unique opportunity to contribute to materials breakthroughs that will enable next-generation AR and VR technologies.
Our internships are twelve (12) to sixteen (16) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.
Required Skills
- Design and implement materials research for optical coatings as it pertains to product architecture or design.
- Synthesize, functionalize, and process novel inorganic materials in the laboratory.
- Analyze material properties via a variety of in-house analytical techniques.
- Transfer new materials to engineering team and assure successful implementation of new materials and processes.
- Collaborate with and support other researchers across various disciplines (process engineers, mechanical engineers, physicists).
- Summarize and present research agenda, progress and results over the course of the intern project.
Minimum Qualification
- Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD degree in the field of Chemistry, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering, with a specific emphasis on inorganic materials synthesis.
- Demonstrated creativity and quick problem-solving capabilities in an R&D setting.
- Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration.
- Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
Preferred Qualification
- Intent to return to degree-program after the completion of the internship/co-op.
- Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by first-authored publications in high-impact journals.
- Extensive hands-on laboratory experience in an academic or industrial R&D setting.
- Experience with sol-gel chemistry and/or nanoparticle synthesis.
- Experience in characterization of inorganic materials, including via XPS, XRD, SEM and TEM.
- Experience with optimization of material mechanical properties via microstructural design.
- Experience in coatings technics or thin film chemistry.
