Job description

Relationship Manager (RM) We're looking for a high performer, who can take ownership of credit analysis as part of the business development and underwriting process, can drive-through documentation and structuring, and undertake ongoing portfolio management of private and commercial banking credits. The RM will manage existing and new relationships, and collaborate with other RMs on new and existing clients.
This role is key to our ability to move very quickly to help clients and to scale-up the Bank. At the same time, it is a unique opportunity for a team-player with excellent credit skills and a strong work ethic to establish themselves as a top RM in our market.
Will work closely with other relationship managers, credit admin, loan ops, and Chief Credit Officer; reports to Chief Banking Officer.
We're looking for someone who:

  • Has excellent credit skills. You can identify key risks, and think through appropriate analysis and structures to quantify and mitigate these risks. You can jump into cash flow and collateral analysis. You're a great writer and can use Excel to help analyze and communicate relevant information.
  • Is motivated. You have a sense of urgency and strong work ethic, because you are excited to solve problems for clients and get deals done.
  • Takes great care of clients. You'll respond quickly, collaborate, and over-communicate. You'll clarify expectations in advance, confirm objectives have been met, and follow-up afterwards to make sure the client is happy.
  • Is a leader and team player. You get along well with your colleagues, share in a common goal, and communicate effectively with peers, support team and management.
  • Wants to help build a great company. You place value on the opportunity to help build and have ownership in a great bank and a great company.

What you'll do all day:

  • Evaluate and develop new business opportunities. You'll work quickly and thoughtfully to evaluate opportunities, complete concise but thorough analysis, clearly identify key risks, and propose appropriate structures, including covenants, monitoring and documentation. You'll help with deal progression, working with loan ops, credit admin, and outside counsel to see deals to closure.
  • Manage existing clients. You'll proactively manage your credit portfolio, including timely completion of routine review and renewals or requested modifications. You'll maintain a relationship plan for high value clients, to ensure we are aligning our resources behind their objectives.
  • Collaborate with senior relationship managers. You will work closely with senior RMs and management to help us move quickly to win, expand and retain high-value relationships. This collaboration is also intended to be a key ingredient to your growth and development and a banker.
  • Maintain a sense of urgency. That doesn't mean everything is urgent. It means you'll keep lists, prioritize and execute-and when needed stay late, or arrive early to get time-sensitive things done.
  • You'll be smooth. You've got great oral and written communication skills; phone, email and face-to-face interactions will be professional, effective and authentic. You won't get overwhelmed; you'll work with well teammates and give credit where due.

You'll be measured on:

  • How well you do "What you'll do all day." See above!
  • The success of the team. We are in this together. Our relationship management team has goals for driving the growth and reputation of the Bank. Your incentive pay will be tied to us achieving those goals; plus you will receive stock options.
  • Teamwork and leadership. We are all working hard, and want to work with people that are committed to their work and each other. We want people to demonstrate leadership by taking ownership and accountability, taking risks, and seeing things through.

A few reasons why you might hate it:

  • There's not always an instruction manual. We specialize in providing easy-to-use solutions to people with complex financial profiles. There isn't always a policy or a model that dictates what we'll do and how we do it. We need to be able to collaborate to very quickly identify key issues and devise viable solutions-or give a "quick no."
  • It is intense. Our clients are busy, have complex needs and are accustomed to world-class service. This requires a high degree of responsiveness to often complex requests, critical thinking to anticipate client needs and any unintended consequences of a creative solution, and excellent collaboration.
  • We hold each other accountable. We have big goals and have made an ambitious brand-promise in terms of being responsive and creative. This means we all have to work hard. It also means you may be held accountable by your teammates-or vice versa. This role requires that you be direct and professional, open-minded yet committed. We all must be adept at handling client expectations and demands, and management of competing priorities and finite resources.

And a few reasons why you might love it:

  • This is a huge opportunity. We're offering the chance for someone who is very smart, has credit expertise and is a great team player to take the next step and begin to develop a portfolio, and develop as an RM and trusted advisor to your clients. What's atypical about this opportunity is that you won't be left to sink-or-swim based on your ability to generate new business. You'll work hard and make a contribution, based on your strengths (credit, customer service, existing contacts, etc.) We'll provide opportunities. Over time, you'll become a senior banker and you'll help provide opportunities to other RMs.
  • You'll be joining a great team. You'll work with people who are as energetic, smart, and driven as you are; plus they will be vested in your success and growth as a banker.
  • You'll work with cool clients. Our customers include entrepreneurs, business owners, individuals and families that have complex financial profiles and value highly personalized service.
  • Your success will be recognized and appreciated. We're a small company; you'll be able to see your direct impact for the benefit of clients and the bank.
  • You'll be helping build a unique bank! There's a need; we are strategically positioned to fill it, and have great support from our shareholders. We're going to be great, and you will be part of making it happen.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Five or more years of experience underwriting and portfolio management experience for complex commercial or private banking transactions, including residential and commercial real estate transactions.
  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including but not limited to Word, Excel and PowerPoint, plus experience spreading (MRA and Bukers preferred), and developing pro forma financial statements, cash flow and borrowing bases.
  • Experience negotiating and reviewing docs, including attorney or internally prepared (LaserPro preferred).
  • Proficient and identifying and analyzing repayment sources, including cash from conversion of assets, operating cash flow, etc., in structuring and testing borrowing bases and covenant packages.

Required experience:

  • Underwriting and portfolio management for complex commercial or private banking clients: 5 years

Experience:

  • Banking: 5 years (Required)
