Job description
OVERVIEW: Assist in the daily operations of the Seattle Art Museum Shops; provide excellent customer service to visitors on the sales floor.

REPORTS TO: Assistant Manager for Retail Operations
COMPENSATION: $16.69 hourly
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Assist customers in SAM Shop and SAM Gallery (as requested).- Be able to perform select operations of SAM Gallery - including, but not limited to: art sales, handling original works of art, hanging art, filing and database related tasks, communicating with artists and clients of SAM Gallery.
- Utilize excellent customer service and retail skills to proactively assist store customers in a pleasant and positive manner.
- Work on Sales Floors of SAM Shop and SAM Shop SPEX. Train to be called to work on SAM Shop AAM in addition, possible Admissions components included in this training.
- Restock SAM Shop sales floor merchandise and supply areas, clean and arrange displays as instructed.
- Maintain a thorough knowledge of inventory, the Museum, membership and shop policies to aid customers with purchasing needs.
- Regularly review Shop and Gallery team lists, posted schedules, calendars and event notifications.
- Open and close shop registers - daily cash counting and safe access.
- Unpack shipments as they arrive and arrange products in SAM Shop stockroom as instructed.
- Assist Managers, Lead Sales Associate and Buyer with daily duties and special projects.
- Assist with tagging and flow of merchandise as needed.
- Assist with the annual physical inventory.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- High school diploma or equivalent experience.
- Previous experience in retail sales.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and to project a professional image when giving and taking information in writing, in person, and over the phone.
- Ability to use a variety of different cash registers.
- Demonstrated proficiency and accuracy using MS Office products, including Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and other software programs.
- Organizational ability with attention to detail.
- Ability to take initiative and prioritize tasks; good time-management, problem-prevention, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team; ability to motivate self.
- Ability to learn and adapt quickly in a constantly changing environment.
- Ability to work accurately with close attention to detail and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Ability to work with donors, members, the public, and co-workers professionally and tactfully, to adhere to Museum policies and to support management decisions in a positive, professional manner.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure: Work areas are primarily inside, in a climate-controlled environment with light background noise.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES REQUIRED FOR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Stationary Work: Approximately 90% of time is spent standing or moving around the work area Balance of time (approximately 10%) is spent stationary while working at a desk.
Communication: Clear and effective communication with volunteers, donors, members, the public, and co-workers is necessary.
Moving: The ability to move up to twenty pounds on occasion is necessary for moving files, equipment, and supplies. Must be able to regularly position self to access files.
Office Work: Ability to effectively and regularly operate a cash register, computer, keyboard, and other office productivity machinery, such as copy machines and printers, and ability to inspect, prepare and use paperwork, files, equipment, and supplies is necessary.
