GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs a variety of skilled or semi-skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance and replacement of City water facilities and distribution system.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the immediate supervision of the Public Works Water Lead. May receive assignments, training, and guidance from Public Works Director and/or designee.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- As part of a crew, performs maintenance, operation and construction activities as needed to provide quality service for the City's water system.
- Inspects, maintains, operates, and/or repairs treatment equipment, booster pumping stations, reservoirs, meters, distribution piping, hydrants, etc., at frequent intervals to ensure that all aspects of the system are functioning properly.
- Works with assigned crews in installing new water mains and service lines.
- Assists the Public Works Water Lead in maintaining a variety of records relating to inspections, maintenance activity, water supply, and consumption.
- Determines the locations of gas, telephone, power, television, and water and wastewater lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation.
- Reads water meters and reports readings to Public Works Water Lead and/or Utility Billing Clerk.
- Services water supply pumps.
- Responds to complaints regarding water leaks, pressure loss or no water; evaluates situations and explains findings to supervisor.
- May contact residents and business owners in area where services will be discontinued and explain when services will be shut off, and how soon it will be turned back on.
- Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by following maintenance schedules and cleaning and checking equipment and tools prior to and after use.
- Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading and unloading of various equipment, sand and gravel.
- Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in the water department.
- Performs routine inspections and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to Public Works Water Lead.
- Performs all duties in conformance with appropriate safety and security standards.
- Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, water main installation, pipe repair, and backfilling.
- Cuts, fits, lays, repairs, taps, cleans, and flushes water mains. Repairs valves, water mains, service lines and fire hydrants. Installs water mains, service lines, and fire hydrants; assists in shutting off broken sections of water mains.
- Makes purchasing recommendations on any material or equipment needed to carry out the duties of the division and makes purchases upon approval.
- May provide guidance and instruction to part-time employees.
- May train entry-level employees and part-time employees to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position when assigned.
- Performs other necessary duties as determined by the Public Works Director and/or designee.
- Standby duty is required for this position once necessary Department of Health certifications are obtained.
Minimum Qualifications:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, including at least one (1) year experience performing most of the essential duties and functions of the position; or any combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements:
Tech I
- Valid Washington State Driver's License and clean driving record
- Flagger certification, Confined Space Entry, First Aid/CPR Certification within one (1) year of hire
- Water Treatment Plant Operator In-Training (OIT) and Water Distribution Manager (WDM) within one (1) year of hire
- 24 months of acceptable performance with no corrective actions needed.
- CDL Class B certification with Tanker Endorsement
- Ability to Reach Stanwood Within Forty (40) Minutes of Call-Out
